Kia Sorento Deliveries Begin in India – First Customers Take Delivery of Kia’s New Flagship SUV

Kia India has started customer deliveries of the new Sorento, just days after launching the premium three-row SUV in the Indian market. The first units have now begun reaching customers through Kia dealerships, marking the start of the Sorento’s retail journey in India.

The Sorento was launched in India earlier this month at a starting price of ₹27.99 lakh (ex-showroom). It becomes Kia’s flagship internal-combustion SUV in the country and, importantly, also introduces the brand’s first strong-hybrid offering for the Indian market.

Kia Sorento Deliveries Get Underway

With production already underway at Kia’s Anantapur plant in Andhra Pradesh, the company appears to have moved quickly from launch to customer deliveries.

Kia had commenced local production of the Sorento on August 20, ahead of its September 4 market introduction. The local manufacturing strategy should help the company maintain better control over availability while also allowing the Sorento to be positioned more aggressively than a fully imported model.

The start of deliveries is particularly important because prospective customers can now begin seeing the Sorento on Indian roads rather than only at dealerships and launch events.

For Kia, this is also the beginning of its push into a substantially higher price segment than its mainstream models such as the Sonet, Seltos and Carens.

Kia Sorento Price in India

The Sorento has been introduced at a starting price of: ₹27.99 lakh, ex-showroom. The strong-hybrid version is priced from around ₹29.49 lakh, ex-showroom, depending on the configuration.

This puts the Sorento into an interesting position in the premium SUV market. Its pricing overlaps with higher variants of several mainstream three-row SUVs while remaining below some traditional premium full-size SUVs.

Hybrid and Diesel Powertrains

One of the Sorento's biggest differentiators is its choice of strong-hybrid and diesel engines.

The hybrid version uses a 1.6-litre turbo-petrol engine combined with an electric motor, making the Sorento Kia's first hybrid passenger vehicle in India. The combustion engine itself produces about 180PS and 265Nm.

Kia is also offering a 2.2-litre diesel engine, providing an alternative for customers who frequently undertake highway journeys or simply prefer diesel in a large SUV.

This dual-powertrain strategy gives Kia access to two different customer groups: buyers looking for improved fuel efficiency and electrification through the hybrid, and traditional premium-SUV customers who continue to prefer diesel.

AWD Gives Sorento Another Advantage

Kia has also confirmed an all-wheel-drive configuration for the Sorento hybrid, giving the SUV another differentiating factor in its segment.

While most customers may primarily use the Sorento in cities and on highways, AWD adds another layer of capability for buyers looking for a premium family SUV that can handle varying road and weather conditions.

Feature-Loaded Premium Cabin

The Sorento follows Kia's familiar strategy of offering a long equipment list.

Depending on the variant, important equipment includes features such as:

  • Dual digital displays

  • Panoramic sunroof

  • Ventilated seats

  • Powered tailgate

  • 360-degree surround-view camera

  • Advanced Driver Assistance Systems

  • Multiple parking sensors and radar-based safety functions

  • Connected-car technology

The India-spec Sorento also introduces Kia's AI-based assistant, with Kia using the Indian model as an important market for introducing this technology.

The combination of technology, three-row seating and multiple powertrain choices will be central to Kia's positioning of the Sorento.

Sorento Enters a Tough Premium SUV Market

The Sorento enters one of India's most competitive aspirational vehicle segments.

Its alternatives include SUVs such as the Toyota Fortuner, Skoda Kodiaq, Jeep Meridian, MG Gloster/Majestor and Volkswagen Tayron, depending on price and variant.

However, the Sorento approaches the segment differently.

Rather than relying primarily on a large conventional petrol or diesel engine, Kia is attempting to combine a turbo-petrol strong-hybrid drivetrain, extensive equipment and premium three-row packaging.

The ₹27.99 lakh entry price also gives Kia considerable room to attract customers considering top-end versions of SUVs positioned below the traditional ₹40 lakh premium SUV category.

Local Production Could Help Availability

Kia's decision to manufacture the Sorento locally at Anantapur could prove significant over the longer term.

The first locally manufactured Sorento rolled off the production line on August 20, 2026, around two weeks before the market launch.

Starting production ahead of the launch has allowed Kia to build initial inventory, which is now beginning to move to customers.

The next few weeks should provide a clearer indication of demand as dealership test drives increase and more prospective buyers get an opportunity to experience the vehicle.

Auto Punditz Take

The start of Sorento deliveries represents more than another new-model rollout for Kia India.

The Sorento takes the company into a considerably more premium segment while simultaneously introducing strong-hybrid technology to Kia's Indian portfolio.

Its competitive starting price, diesel alternative, hybrid powertrain, three-row seating and local manufacturing give Kia several ways to attract customers.

The more important indicator now will be the Sorento's monthly retail and dispatch volumes over the next few months. Unlike mass-market Kia products such as the Seltos and Sonet, the Sorento operates in a much smaller premium segment where even relatively modest monthly volumes can represent meaningful market share.

With the first customers now receiving their vehicles, Kia Sorento's real test in the Indian premium SUV market has officially begun.
