Land Rover Defender 110 Now Locally Assembled in India; Prices Slashed by Up to ₹34 Lakh

JLR has commenced local assembly of the Defender 110 in India, bringing significant price reductions across three engine options. The luxury off-roader now starts at ₹99 lakh (ex-showroom), making it more competitively positioned in India's premium SUV market.

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has taken a major step towards strengthening its position in India's luxury SUV segment by introducing locally assembled versions of the Land Rover Defender 110. The SUV, previously imported as a Completely Built Unit (CBU), is now being assembled domestically through the Completely Knocked Down (CKD) route.

The transition has allowed JLR to reduce the Defender 110's ex-showroom prices by ₹14 lakh to ₹34 lakh, depending on the engine variant. The locally assembled range is available in the X-Dynamic HSE trim with three powertrain options.

How Much Cheaper Is the Locally Assembled Defender?

The 3.0-litre petrol and diesel variants receive the largest benefit, with a 22.4% reduction in their ex-showroom prices. The 2.0-litre petrol version has become approximately 12.4% cheaper.

Why Local Assembly Matters

Previously, the Defender was imported into India as a fully manufactured vehicle from JLR's facility in Nitra, Slovakia. Importing finished vehicles attracts a different customs-duty structure compared with bringing in component kits for domestic assembly.

Under the CKD route, major vehicle components are imported and assembled at an Indian facility, helping reduce import-related costs. The benefits for JLR include potentially more competitive pricing, greater flexibility in domestic market planning and an opportunity to expand the Defender's customer base.

However, CKD assembly should not be confused with complete indigenous manufacturing. Many major components can continue to be imported even when final assembly takes place in India.

Defender Was Already JLR India's Best-Selling Model

The Defender's local assembly is particularly significant considering its contribution to JLR India's business. The Defender was JLR India's highest-selling model during FY2026. The Defender, Range Rover and Range Rover Sport collectively contributed more than 80% of the manufacturer's Indian sales during the fiscal year.

This highlights the growing importance of high-value luxury SUVs in JLR India's portfolio.

The Defender joins several other locally assembled JLR models, including select variants of the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Velar, Range Rover Evoque and Discovery Sport.

What Does This Mean for Luxury SUV Buyers?

The Defender 110 now offers a different value proposition compared with its fully imported predecessor. A ₹34 lakh reduction is particularly meaningful at the premium end of the market, potentially bringing the SUV into consideration for customers previously evaluating similarly priced luxury vehicles.

Nevertheless, buyers should compare the complete on-road price, specifications, availability and optional equipment rather than relying solely on ex-showroom savings.

The reported local-assembly announcement specifically covers the Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE versions. It should not be interpreted as a price reduction across every Defender body style or high-performance variant.

Auto Punditz Take

JLR's decision to locally assemble the Defender 110 is a strategically important move in the Indian luxury vehicle market.

The most noteworthy aspect is the aggressive pricing correction for the 3.0-litre petrol and diesel versions. By reducing their prices by over 22%, JLR has strengthened the Defender's competitiveness without requiring a fundamental change in the vehicle's premium positioning.

From an industry perspective, the decision also reflects a broader strategy among luxury manufacturers: using India-based assembly to improve price competitiveness while retaining imported technologies and global product architectures.

Given the Defender's already strong contribution to JLR India sales, the lower entry price could support additional demand. However, the actual volume impact will depend on customer response, supply availability and the pace of deliveries.

The bigger story is not merely the ₹34 lakh price reduction, but JLR's increasing commitment to India's premium SUV market.
