India-Made Maruti Jimny, Fronx and e Vitara Exports to Japan Cross 1 Lakh Units
Maruti Suzuki has crossed a significant export milestone, with cumulative shipments of the India-made Fronx, Jimny 5-door and e Vitara to Japan exceeding 1 lakh units.
The milestone underlines the changing role of Maruti Suzuki’s Indian manufacturing operations within Suzuki’s global network. Japan, the home market of parent Suzuki Motor Corporation, has now emerged as Maruti Suzuki’s second-largest export destination, making the achievement particularly significant.
The three India-manufactured models have also contributed to Suzuki becoming the No.1 vehicle importer in Japan during FY2025-26, according to the latest reported data. Nearly all vehicles imported by Suzuki into Japan during the financial year were manufactured by Maruti Suzuki in India.
Maruti Suzuki’s Japan Export Journey
Maruti Suzuki’s recent push into Japan began with the Fronx, which started shipping to the Japanese market in August 2024. The first consignment comprised more than 1,600 units shipped from Pipavav Port in Gujarat. Fronx became the first Maruti Suzuki SUV exported to Japan and the second India-made Maruti model supplied to the country after the Baleno in 2016.
This was followed by the India-made Jimny 5-door, sold in Japan as the Jimny Nomade.
The Jimny received an exceptional response in the Japanese market. Maruti Suzuki revealed that orders crossed 50,000 units within days of its introduction, forcing Suzuki to deal with substantially higher demand than initially expected.
The third addition is the e Vitara, Suzuki's first battery-electric vehicle. Production of the e Vitara is centred at Maruti Suzuki's Hansalpur plant in Gujarat, which has been positioned as the model's global production hub.
India-Made Models Supplied to Japan
Model | Japan Export / Introduction | Key Significance |
Maruti Suzuki Fronx | August 2024 | First India-made Maruti SUV exported to Japan |
Jimny 5-door / Jimny Nomade | FY2024-25 | Over 50,000 orders within days of launch |
Suzuki e Vitara | FY2025-26 | Suzuki's first BEV; manufactured in India for global markets |
Together, these three models have now crossed 1 lakh cumulative exports to Japan.
Fronx Becomes a Major Global Export Success
The Fronx has emerged as one of the strongest examples of Maruti Suzuki's export strategy. In August 2026, Maruti Suzuki announced that the Fronx had crossed 2 lakh cumulative exports from India in under 38 months, making it the fastest SUV manufactured in India to achieve the milestone.
Interestingly, while the first 1 lakh export units took around 25 months, the next 1 lakh were added in roughly 13 months, indicating a significant acceleration in overseas demand. The Fronx is currently exported to nearly 90 countries, including Japan.
Auto Punditz's FY2026 model-wise export analysis also placed the Fronx at the top of India's passenger vehicle export rankings, with 90,186 units exported during the financial year, up 30.5% year-on-year.
Jimny Is Another Export Powerhouse
The Jimny 5-door has become another important contributor to Maruti Suzuki’s international volumes. The SUV crossed 1 lakh cumulative exports from India in October 2025 and is supplied to more than 100 markets.
Japan, Mexico, Australia, South Africa and Chile were identified by Maruti Suzuki as the Jimny's five biggest export destinations at the time. In FY2026, Maruti Suzuki exported 72,209 Jimny units, an increase of 50.5% over the previous financial year, making it India's second-most exported passenger vehicle behind the Fronx.
e Vitara Adds EVs to Maruti's Export Story
The e Vitara is strategically different from the Fronx and Jimny because it marks Maruti Suzuki's entry into global battery-electric vehicle exports. Exports commenced in 2025, with the first major shipments heading to Europe. Maruti Suzuki said more than 2,900 units were initially shipped from Pipavav Port to 12 European countries.
By the end of FY2025-26, Maruti Suzuki had shipped more than 25,000 e Vitara units to 44 countries. Auto Punditz's export analysis recorded 25,549 e Vitara exports during April 2025-March 2026, placing the electric SUV among India's notable new export models despite being in its first year of overseas shipments. With Japan joining the international markets receiving the e Vitara, India is now playing a central role in Suzuki's global EV manufacturing strategy.
Japan Becomes Maruti Suzuki's Second-Largest Export Market
Perhaps the most important part of the 1-lakh milestone is Japan's rise within Maruti Suzuki's export portfolio. Japan became the company's second-largest export market during FY2025-26 and retained that position during the April-August period of FY2026-27.
This is noteworthy because Japan has one of the world's most mature automobile manufacturing ecosystems and is Suzuki Motor Corporation's home market.
Instead of India simply importing technology or models developed for Japan, the manufacturing flow increasingly works in the opposite direction: vehicles engineered for Suzuki's international requirements are being manufactured in India and shipped back to Japanese customers.
Maruti Suzuki MD and CEO Hisashi Takeuchi described the 1 lakh-unit milestone as an endorsement of India's manufacturing capability and highlighted the transformation of the India-Japan relationship from local production for Indian customers to supplying vehicles manufactured in India to Suzuki's home country.
Maruti Suzuki's Overall Exports Continue to Grow
The Japan milestone comes against the backdrop of Maruti Suzuki's rapidly expanding global business. The company exported more than 4.47 lakh vehicles during FY2025-26, its highest-ever annual export volume and an increase of more than 34% compared with FY2024-25.
Maruti Suzuki accounted for roughly 49% of India's passenger vehicle exports in FY2025-26 and retained its position as the country's largest PV exporter for the fifth consecutive year. The momentum has continued into FY2026-27. In Q1 FY2026-27 alone, Maruti Suzuki accounted for more than 55% of India's passenger vehicle exports, with Fronx, Jimny 5-door and e Vitara among its leading export models.
In August 2026, Maruti Suzuki exported another 33,844 vehicles globally.

Why This Milestone Matters
The 1 lakh-unit Japan milestone represents more than just another export record for Maruti Suzuki. It signals a structural change in Suzuki's global production strategy. India is evolving from being primarily Suzuki's largest volume market into an increasingly important global manufacturing and export hub. Models such as the Fronx and Jimny have already demonstrated that India-built vehicles can generate strong demand internationally, while the e Vitara potentially extends the same strategy into the EV segment.
Japan's emergence as Maruti Suzuki's second-largest export market is particularly symbolic. Vehicles built by Suzuki's Indian subsidiary are now being shipped at scale to the parent company's home market — one of the strongest endorsements yet of India's growing role within the global automotive manufacturing ecosystem.
For Maruti Suzuki, the next phase of growth is therefore likely to depend not only on domestic sales but also increasingly on exports, with India serving as a production base for SUVs, compact cars and EVs destined for markets across Asia, Europe, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East.
