Mercedes-Benz begins local production of its next-generation Electric GLC at Chakan, Pune, backed by an additional ₹200 crore investment in 2026. The electric luxury SUV offers 489 hp, an 800V architecture and a claimed range of up to 711 km.

Mercedes-Benz India has commenced local production of the all-new GLC 400 4MATIC Electric at its manufacturing facility in Chakan, Pune, marking another milestone in the German luxury automaker's electrification strategy in India.

Priced at ₹78.50 lakh (ex-showroom, India), the new Electric GLC combines a next-generation electric vehicle platform, a 94 kWh battery and an advanced 800-volt electrical architecture. Customer deliveries are scheduled to begin in mid-November 2026.

The first locally manufactured Electric GLC rolled off the production line on 4 November 2026 in the presence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar and senior Mercedes-Benz global executives.

The development also makes India one of the manufacturing locations for the new Electric GLC, alongside Mercedes-Benz's Bremen facility in Germany.

First Locally Manufactured Mercedes-Benz on the MB.EA-M Platform

The Electric GLC becomes the first locally manufactured Mercedes-Benz vehicle in India based on the company's next-generation Mercedes-Benz Electric Architecture (MB.EA-M).

Unlike conventional models adapted for electrification, the new architecture has been developed specifically for electric vehicles. It supports the Electric GLC's high-performance drivetrain, 800V electrical system and advanced digital technologies.

Another important feature is the introduction of the Mercedes-Benz Operating System, or MB.OS, in the locally manufactured portfolio.

The system integrates intelligent navigation, advanced driver assistance functions, over-the-air software updates and personalised digital experiences. The Electric GLC is therefore an important development not only for Mercedes-Benz's electric vehicle portfolio but also for its India manufacturing capabilities.

Mercedes-Benz Invests Another ₹200 Crore in India During 2026

Mercedes-Benz has announced an additional investment of ₹200 crore in its Indian manufacturing operations during 2026. The investment covers new product production preparations, manufacturing operations and digitalisation initiatives at the Chakan facility.

With this investment, Mercedes-Benz India's cumulative investment has reached ₹3,200 crore, which the company describes as the highest investment by a luxury passenger vehicle manufacturer in India.

The Chakan facility, established in 2009, spans approximately 100 acres and forms part of Mercedes-Benz's global manufacturing network. The plant works with nearly 20 direct suppliers in India. Mercedes-Benz estimates that its manufacturing ecosystem supports approximately 18,000 people at regional suppliers and service providers, beyond its direct workforce.

Electric and Petrol-Diesel Models Built on the Same Production Line

One of the most significant aspects of the Electric GLC's local production is the flexibility of the company's manufacturing operations. Mercedes-Benz manufactures the Electric GLC on the same flexible production line used for its internal combustion engine vehicles.

This allows the manufacturer to produce electric and combustion-engine models within a common production infrastructure. For Mercedes-Benz, such flexibility is particularly relevant as the Indian luxury vehicle market transitions towards electric mobility at an evolving pace.

A common production system can potentially improve manufacturing utilisation while enabling production adjustments according to customer demand.

Electric GLC Specifications – 489 hp, 800 Nm and 711 km Range

The Mercedes-Benz GLC 400 4MATIC Electric uses a dual-motor all-wheel-drive configuration. The electric powertrain generates 360 kW (489 hp) and 800 Nm of peak torque, enabling the SUV to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.3 seconds.

Its usable 94 kWh battery delivers a claimed combined WLTP range of up to 711 km.

800V Architecture Enables Ultra-Fast Charging

The Electric GLC supports DC fast charging at up to 330 kW.

Under optimal charging conditions, Mercedes-Benz claims that the SUV can replenish enough energy for up to 303 km of driving range in approximately 10 minutes.

This charging capability represents an important improvement for long-distance electric mobility. However, achieving the stated charging performance depends on the availability of compatible high-power charging infrastructure and suitable battery conditions.

A New Generation of Mercedes-Benz Digital Luxury

The Electric GLC introduces several technologies designed to differentiate it from conventional luxury SUVs. Among its headline features is the 39.1-inch MBUX Hyperscreen, extending across the dashboard.

The SUV also features an illuminated front grille incorporating 942 pixels, creating a distinctive digital lighting signature. Another feature is the SKY CONTROL panoramic roof with illuminated stars, adding to the vehicle's premium interior experience.

Mercedes-Benz has also highlighted the use of recycled materials and materials with a reduced carbon footprint as part of the vehicle's sustainability approach.

Together, these technologies position the Electric GLC as an important step forward in the company's transition towards software-defined electric luxury vehicles.

AI and Robotics Transform Mercedes-Benz's Pune Manufacturing Facility

Mercedes-Benz has expanded the use of artificial intelligence, robotics and digital manufacturing technologies at its Chakan facility. The plant currently operates more than 15 live AI projects intended to improve production quality, operational efficiency and workforce capabilities.

Camera-based Vision AI systems monitor manufacturing quality in real time, while data-driven supply chain models help anticipate potential disruptions.

Industrial robots are used for critical manufacturing processes, including welding, riveting and painting.

Mercedes-Benz is also introducing its first Software Terminal as part of the integration of MB.OS architecture into locally manufactured vehicles. The company reports a 70% expansion in solar capacity within a year, reinforcing its efforts towards more sustainable manufacturing operations.

Mercedes-Benz Electric GLC Receives Over 550 Expressions of Interest

Mercedes-Benz India has reported encouraging early customer interest in the Electric GLC.

According to the company, the SUV received more than 550 expressions of interest within the first 36 hours of opening customer registrations for interest. The figure indicates initial interest in the product ahead of its Indian deliveries, although expressions of interest should not be interpreted as confirmed bookings or retail sales.

The Electric GLC also builds upon the established reputation of the conventional GLC in India.

Since its introduction in 2016, the combustion-engine Mercedes-Benz GLC has attracted nearly 22,000 customers in the Indian market. The electric version now aims to extend the model's appeal to customers looking for premium electric mobility without moving away from an established luxury SUV nameplate.

Mercedes-Benz Introduces 2,500 kWh Complimentary Public Charging Credits

Alongside the launch of Electric GLC production, Mercedes-Benz India has introduced an additional ownership benefit for new battery-electric vehicle customers.

Customers can now choose 2,500 kWh of complimentary MB.CHARGE Public charging credits instead of receiving the complimentary AC wall-box charger. The credits are valid for 24 months from MB.CHARGE Public service activation, subject to the applicable terms and conditions.

Mercedes-Benz says its MB.CHARGE Public network provides access to over 22,000 charging points across India through participating charging-point operators. The programme gives customers who prefer public charging an alternative to home wall-box installation, potentially benefiting owners who live in locations where installing a private charging unit is difficult.

Auto Punditz Analysis

The beginning of Electric GLC production in Pune represents a notable development in India's premium electric vehicle segment.Three aspects make this announcement particularly significant.

First, Mercedes-Benz is extending local manufacturing to its next-generation electric vehicle architecture. Producing an MB.EA-M-based vehicle in India demonstrates the increasing technological scope of the company's domestic operations.

Second, flexible manufacturing provides an advantage during the electric transition. With ICE and electric models sharing production infrastructure, Mercedes-Benz can respond to changes in demand without requiring completely separate assembly facilities for every powertrain.

Third, the Electric GLC brings advanced electric performance to an established luxury SUV nameplate. Its 711 km claimed range, 489 hp output and ultra-fast charging capability make it a technologically ambitious offering in the Indian luxury electric SUV market.

Nevertheless, the vehicle's commercial success will depend on how its ₹78.50 lakh positioning resonates with buyers, the availability of suitable fast-charging infrastructure and how effectively Mercedes-Benz converts early expressions of interest into deliveries.

The addition of public charging credits is another customer-focused initiative, although home and public charging convenience will remain important considerations for prospective buyers.

Mercedes-Benz has already sold more than 2.4 lakh vehicles in India, according to the company, with a substantial proportion locally manufactured.

The Electric GLC now adds another chapter to that manufacturing journey, combining locally assembled premium vehicles with next-generation electrification technologies.

With customer deliveries scheduled to begin in mid-November 2026, the Electric GLC could play an important role in expanding Mercedes-Benz's electric vehicle presence in India's luxury car market.
