MG Cyberster, M9 Now Available With BaaS: Premium EV Ownership Gets a Lower Entry Price
JSW MG Motor India has expanded its Battery-as-a-Service model to its premium MG Select range, making the MG Cyberster electric roadster and MG M9 luxury electric MPV available with a lower upfront purchase price.
Under the BaaS model, buyers pay a reduced vehicle price initially and then pay separately for battery usage on a per-kilometre basis. MG already uses this model for its mass-market EVs, and its extension to the Cyberster and M9 shows the company is trying to make premium EVs more accessible without directly cutting headline positioning.

What Has Changed?
The MG Cyberster and MG M9 were earlier sold as conventional full-price EVs through MG Select. MG’s official Select website currently lists the Cyberster from ₹82.49 lakh and the M9 from ₹79.94 lakh, ex-showroom. With BaaS, the initial acquisition cost comes down, while the battery cost shifts to a usage-linked model.
MG’s broader BaaS structure works on the principle of paying for battery usage separately, starting from a per-kilometre charge, excluding charging cost, as explained in MG’s own BaaS FAQ for its EV range.
MG Cyberster: Electric Roadster With A Lower Entry Point
The MG Cyberster is positioned as a performance-focused electric roadster. It is MG’s flagship lifestyle EV in India and is sold through the brand’s premium Select retail network. The car offers a claimed range of up to 580 km and is aimed at buyers looking for a convertible electric sports car rather than a mainstream luxury sedan or SUV.
With BaaS, MG can make the Cyberster appear more attainable at the booking and purchase stage. However, buyers will need to evaluate total cost based on monthly usage, battery rental terms, charging cost, insurance and resale assumptions.
MG M9: Luxury Electric MPV Gets BaaS Too
The MG M9 is the brand’s premium electric MPV for India, aimed at chauffeur-driven buyers, luxury family users and fleet operators in the premium mobility space. Its key appeal lies in space, rear-seat comfort and EV refinement.
BaaS could be more relevant for the M9 than the Cyberster, especially for users with predictable running patterns. For chauffeur-driven and business use cases, a usage-linked battery model may help buyers calculate operating costs more clearly.
Why This Matters
MG has been one of the most aggressive brands in India when it comes to experimenting with EV pricing models. By extending BaaS to higher-end products, the company is no longer limiting the concept to affordable EVs.
The move could help MG in three ways:
Reduce the psychological barrier of premium EV pricing.
Bring more attention to MG Select showrooms.
Offer an alternative ownership format in a segment where EV adoption is still niche.
Auto Punditz Take
MG’s BaaS expansion for the Cyberster and M9 is less about mass-market volumes and more about changing how premium EVs are presented to buyers. The lower entry price may attract attention, but the real value will depend on the buyer’s running pattern and the fine print of battery usage charges.
For low-running lifestyle buyers, the Cyberster’s BaaS equation may need careful calculation. For the M9, especially in chauffeur-driven or business use, the model could make more practical sense.
