Motherson to Invest ₹11,000 Crore in Tamil Nadu Over Five Years; Around 7,000 Jobs Planned
Samvardhana Motherson International Limited (SAMIL), one of India’s largest automotive component suppliers, has committed to invest approximately ₹11,000 crore in Tamil Nadu over the next five years.
The investment is planned across design, engineering, manufacturing, assembly and logistics operations, and is expected to generate around 7,000 employment opportunities in the state.
The investment forms part of a Memorandum of Understanding signed between Motherson and Guidance Tamil Nadu, the state’s investment promotion agency. Motherson’s European- and UK-based joint venture entities will also participate in the proposed expansion.

₹11,000 Crore Investment Spread Across Five Years
Under the agreement, Motherson plans to establish integrated facilities encompassing:
Design
Engineering
Manufacturing
Assembly
Logistics
The facilities are planned at strategic locations across Tamil Nadu, although individual locations, manufacturing capacities and the allocation of the ₹11,000 crore investment among the various projects have not yet been disclosed.
The MoU was exchanged in London between Barrie Painter, Global Head – Marketing and Communications, Samvardhana Motherson International Group, and Deepak Jacob, Managing Director, Guidance Tamil Nadu.
Around 7,000 New Jobs Expected
The proposed investment is expected to create approximately 7,000 jobs, spanning manufacturing as well as engineering, design and supply-chain-related functions.
That is significant because the expansion appears to extend beyond conventional component manufacturing. The inclusion of engineering, design and logistics suggests that Motherson intends to develop a broader integrated operating base in Tamil Nadu rather than merely adding production capacity.
Motherson Already Has a Large Tamil Nadu Presence
Tamil Nadu is already an important manufacturing base for the Motherson Group.
Motherson's current address directory lists multiple operations in and around the Chennai industrial belt, including facilities at Oragadam, Sriperumbudur and Kanchipuram. These operations cover businesses such as modules and polymer products, elastomers and other automotive components.
The fresh investment commitment could therefore represent a substantial expansion of an existing supplier ecosystem rather than Motherson entering the state for the first time.
Why Tamil Nadu Matters to Auto Component Makers
Tamil Nadu hosts one of India's largest automotive manufacturing clusters, particularly around Chennai, Sriperumbudur and Oragadam.
A large supplier such as Motherson can use this established ecosystem to locate component production, assembly and engineering operations closer to vehicle manufacturers while also serving export programmes.
The scope of Motherson's proposed investment is particularly notable because it combines manufacturing with engineering and logistics capabilities, potentially increasing the amount of value-added automotive activity performed within the state.
Motherson Is Expanding at a Significant Scale
The Tamil Nadu announcement comes as Motherson continues to expand its global operations.
For FY2025-26, Samvardhana Motherson reported consolidated revenue from operations of ₹1,26,104 crore, up 11% year-on-year. The company spent ₹5,911 crore on capital expenditure during FY26 and indicated FY27 capex of approximately ₹6,000 crore, plus or minus 10%.
Motherson also reported a booked business pipeline of approximately USD 96 billion at the end of FY26. Of this, 75% was linked to conventional automotive programmes, 22% to automotive EV programmes and 3% to non-automotive businesses.
The company has progressively diversified beyond wiring harnesses into areas including modules and polymer products, vision systems, integrated assemblies, logistics, aerospace and other businesses.
Global Footprint Continues to Expand
Motherson describes itself as a global design, engineering, manufacturing and assembly specialist supplying most major vehicle manufacturers.
According to its FY26 results disclosure, the group operated through more than 425 facilities across 47 countries at the time of publication. Its current corporate directory subsequently lists more than 475 facilities globally, indicating the continuing expansion of its operating footprint.
Its scale also allows Motherson to combine technology and manufacturing capabilities held by various international subsidiaries and joint ventures — an element specifically highlighted in the Tamil Nadu investment agreement.
Not All ₹11,000 Crore Will Be Invested Immediately
It is important to distinguish the announcement from completed investment.
The ₹11,000 crore figure represents a proposed investment commitment under an MoU spanning five years. Actual capital deployment will depend on individual projects progressing through land allocation, approvals, customer programmes, construction and commissioning.
Detailed timelines for each facility, production capacity and investment phases have not yet been announced publicly.
Tamil Nadu Attracts Broader Industrial Investments
The Motherson agreement was the largest individual commitment among a broader set of investment agreements announced during the Tamil Nadu delegation's UK visit.
Other commitments announced alongside it included investments in Global Capability Centres, technology services and electrical equipment manufacturing. The Motherson commitment nevertheless accounts for the overwhelming majority of the investment announced in that initial package.
Auto Punditz Take
Motherson's proposed ₹11,000 crore investment is notable not merely for its size but also for its scope.
Rather than being restricted to a new component factory, the planned expansion covers the entire chain from design and engineering to manufacturing, assembly and logistics.
For India's automotive supply industry, this reflects the increasing localisation of functions that were once concentrated primarily around manufacturing. Engineering, product development and supply-chain capabilities are becoming increasingly important as automakers introduce more electronics-intensive vehicles, EV platforms and globally integrated sourcing programmes.
The next important developments to track will be the location of individual facilities, investment split, customer programmes, technologies to be manufactured and commissioning timelines.
