Tough Times Ahead
Tata Motors, in their earlier plans shared during a quarterly earnings call, had no room for the Tiago and Tigor. They saw no room for growth in the hatch and sedan segment and it is consistent with what we are seeing in the last several years.
But, when Maruti Suzuki took the mantle of “the safest small sedan in India”, Tata felt the poke. What had been the marketing slogan for Tata Motors for so long was now part of Maruti Suzuki’s marketing campaign. And the Tigor was relegated to the 2nd spot with a 4-star safety rating. That too with the older testing process.
Not only did the Dzire become the safest sedan in its segment, it did so without putting on a lot of weight. It shattered the biases that a 5-star safe car needed to be heavy and have a thick sheet metal. Instead of using more of the nation’s iron, they used some good-old-fashioned Japanese engineering.
Now, Tata Motors are scrambling to make sure that they earn the 5-star safety badge for the Tigor and Tiago twins. Not only that, the likelihood of an economic slowdown also makes it a sensible approach for any carmaker to have small cars in their portfolio. In the event of a downturn, the consumers will still end up buying cars. But their budget will force them to choose more affordable alternatives. For instance, a Creta buyer may consider a Venue instead while a Venue buyer may consider the Exter. And the Exter buyer could start evaluating if the Nios is adequate to meet their needs or not.
Both of these situations mandated that Tata rework on their small cars and give them a generation update. The Tiago first went on sale in early 2016 and it’s almost 9 years old. In these times, that’s an unreasonably long product lifecycle. It’s time they get their update too. They have served as test beds and guinea pigs for far too long. Tata first tested the AMT, CNG, EV, CNG+AMT and CNG with a boot space concepts with the Tiago platform.)
We wish them all the best with their forthcoming efforts with their small car platform.

Tata SUVs continue to gain YoY while the hatchbacks and sedan continue to lose YoY. Still, Maruti may have forced Tata’s hand to revisit their decision of leaving the small cars demand to taper to nil.
