Renault Duster Strong Hybrid E-Tech 160 Launched at ₹16.99 Lakh – 29 kmpl Mileage, 160 PS Power
Renault India has officially launched the new Duster Strong Hybrid E-Tech 160 at an introductory starting price of ₹16.99 lakh (ex-showroom). Available in three variants – Evolution, Techno and Emotion – the hybrid SUV combines a 1.8-litre petrol engine with two electric motors to deliver 160 PS of combined power and an ARAI-certified fuel efficiency of 29 kmpl.
The launch marks Renault's entry into India's increasingly competitive strong-hybrid midsize SUV segment, where it will challenge the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Maruti Suzuki Victoris and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder.
With its combination of performance, claimed fuel efficiency and competitive introductory pricing, the Duster Hybrid could strengthen Renault's position in a segment dominated by established Japanese and Indian manufacturers.

Renault Duster Hybrid – Variant-Wise Prices
Renault has introduced the Strong Hybrid E-Tech 160 in three variants, with the top-spec Emotion priced at ₹19.49 lakh.
Variant | Introductory price (ex-showroom) |
Evolution | ₹16.99 lakh |
Techno | ₹18.99 lakh |
Emotion | ₹19.49 lakh |
The price difference between the entry-level Evolution and the top-spec Emotion is ₹2.50 lakh, while upgrading from Techno to Emotion costs ₹50,000.
These prices position the Duster Hybrid as an attractive alternative for buyers looking to switch from conventional petrol-powered SUVs to more fuel-efficient strong hybrids.
1.8-Litre Strong Hybrid Powertrain – How Does It Work?
The biggest highlight of the new Duster is Renault's E-Tech 160 strong-hybrid powertrain.
Unlike conventional mild-hybrid vehicles, the Duster can operate on electric power alone under suitable conditions, reducing petrol consumption during city driving.
The system combines a naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine, two electric motors and a compact lithium-ion battery.
Specification | Renault Duster Hybrid |
Petrol engine | 1.8-litre, four-cylinder |
Engine displacement | 1,789 cc |
Combined power | 160 PS |
Electric motors | Two |
Battery capacity | 1.4 kWh |
Transmission | Multi-mode automatic |
Drivetrain | Front-wheel drive |
Certified mileage | 29 kmpl |
0–100 km/h | 9.6 seconds (claimed) |
The hybrid system intelligently switches between electric propulsion, petrol-engine operation and combined power delivery depending on driving conditions.
Unlike the e-CVT-based systems found in Toyota and Maruti Suzuki hybrids, Renault
uses a multi-mode transmission featuring fixed gear ratios.
The battery is recharged through the petrol engine and regenerative braking. Owners do not need to plug the Duster Hybrid into an external charging station.
29 kmpl Mileage – A Major Selling Point
The Duster Hybrid's ARAI-certified fuel efficiency of 29 kmpl is one of its strongest competitive advantages.
Renault also claims a driving range exceeding 1,400 km on a full tank under suitable test conditions, making it particularly interesting for customers undertaking frequent highway journeys.
The company states that its E-Tech technology can enable electric-only operation for up to 80% of city driving under suitable conditions. However, this does not mean the vehicle can cover 80% of every journey without using petrol.
Duster Hybrid vs Competitors – Claimed Mileage
SUV | Certified mileage |
Renault Duster Strong Hybrid | 29.00 kmpl |
Maruti Suzuki Victoris Strong Hybrid | 28.65 kmpl |
Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara Strong Hybrid | 27.97 kmpl |
Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder Strong Hybrid | 27.97 kmpl |
Exterior Design – Familiar Duster Styling with Hybrid-Specific Updates
The Strong Hybrid retains the rugged design of the new-generation Renault Duster, including its muscular proportions, prominent wheel arches, protective body cladding and distinctive front styling.
The hybrid version also receives an illuminated front grille, enhancing its visual identity. Renault has additionally introduced frequency-dependent dampers, intended to improve ride comfort across different road surfaces.
These additions help differentiate the hybrid model from the regular turbo-petrol Duster.
Interior, Features and Safety
The Duster Hybrid builds on the equipment offered in the new-generation Duster, which includes features such as a panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats, a digital instrument cluster and a touchscreen infotainment system.
The new hybrid also introduces two interior themes, including a Dune Brown colour scheme with lighter pillars.
The wider Duster range offers Level 2 ADAS and a comprehensive safety package. The model has also secured a five-star Bharat NCAP crash-test rating.
However, the availability of individual convenience and safety features will vary by variant. Buyers should verify the Evolution, Techno and Emotion equipment lists before choosing a version.
Bookings, Deliveries and Warranty
Renault opened bookings for the Duster Strong Hybrid on October 9, 2026, with a booking amount of ₹21,000 through authorised dealerships and its official website.
The launch also comes with an ownership package offering a seven-year vehicle warranty and an eight-year/1,60,000 km hybrid battery warranty.
Renault has introduced a Protect 360 package priced at ₹89,900, covering insurance, maintenance and an assured buyback arrangement, subject to the programme's terms and conditions.
Customer deliveries are expected during the Diwali period, with buyers advised to confirm their allocation and delivery schedule with dealerships.
Auto Punditz Take
The launch of the Duster Strong Hybrid E-Tech 160 is an important development for Renault India. With introductory pricing starting at ₹16.99 lakh, an ARAI-certified efficiency figure of 29 kmpl and 160 PS of combined power, Renault has presented an interesting alternative in the midsize SUV market.
Three factors work in the Duster Hybrid's favour: competitive entry pricing, class-leading claimed fuel efficiency among its current strong-hybrid competitors and the Duster nameplate's established association with ruggedness and ride comfort.
However, success will depend on more than specifications alone.
The Grand Vitara, Hyryder and Victoris benefit from established hybrid technology, strong dealer networks and customer familiarity. Renault will need to demonstrate comparable long-term reliability, ownership costs and service support.
The ₹16.99 lakh Evolution is particularly interesting because it brings strong-hybrid technology into a more accessible price bracket. Meanwhile, the ₹19.49 lakh Emotion could appeal to customers seeking a more premium hybrid SUV experience.
Importantly, the 29 kmpl certification figure must translate into meaningful real-world fuel savings to justify choosing the hybrid over a less expensive turbo-petrol Duster. Customers with substantial city driving and higher annual mileage are likely to benefit the most.
For Renault, this launch also provides an opportunity to attract customers who previously preferred the fuel efficiency of the original diesel-powered Duster.
The Duster Hybrid looks promising on paper. Its ability to translate these advantages into sustained sales will depend on pricing after the introductory period, dealership availability, actual fuel consumption and customer ownership experience.
