Segmentwise Car Sales for July 2021 - Compact SUVs still the highest growing segment!

SUV sales have risen to an all-time high in the Indian market and almost all the OEMs have an offering in the SUV category. And Compact SUV has picked the fancy of the automakers as it has garnered tremendous volumes over the years. Do note that 10 out of 15 mass-market OEMs in India have a product in the Compact SUV category and all 15 out of 15 OEMs have an offering in the overall SUV category.

July'21 saw a tremendous surge in MUV volumes and was primarily driven by the growth of Ertiga and Innova! This segment is going to gain higher traction as OEMs like Kia (with KY) and Hyundai enter gradually. The growing popularity of 7 seater SUVs (Safari, Hector Plus, Alcazar, upcoming XUV700) is a testimony of how the Indian buyer wants a practical 7 seater for the family.

  • Compact Hatchback was the largest segment in terms of volumes and was marginally ahead of Compact SUVs.

  • Compact SUV segment contributed near to 20% of the passenger cars sold in India for July 2021. Also; the segment recorded one of the highest YoY growth 133 percent in July'21 vs July'20.

  • Mid SUVs followed to the third position and recorded YoY growth of 45 percent.

  • MUVs overtook Premium Hatchbacks by a whisker and ranked fourth in the table. It grew an impressive 60 percent YoY.

  • Premium Hatchbacks slipped to the fifth position and had cumulative sales of 33,233 units in July 2021. Altroz has been faring consistently well and has overtaken i20 in July 2021 as well.

  • Compact Sedan segment grew a modest 20 percent YoY. The best-selling model in the segment Dzire alone contributed to over 60 percent of volumes in the segment. The facelifted Honda Amaze is slated to be launched on 18th Aug and hopes to place the model back to the second position in the segment ranking table.

  • Premium SUVs registered a 111 percent YoY increase and both the best selling models in the segment (Fortuner & Endeavour) posted healthy volumes.
