Segmentwise Sales Statistics – March 2020
While the overall industry has seen a major impact / slowdown in Mar’20 due to the lockdown; some segment have fared better than the other segments. This post is to highlight the sales statistics across the segments and the performance of the models in the respective segments.
Entry Hatch saw the lowest downfall due to the performance of the new entrant S-Presso. As a matter of fact; S-Presso has sold higher than the likes of i10 & Celerio in March 2020!
Mid-SUV has been gaining a lot of traction in the past few years in the Indian market. Mid-SUVs market size is now equivalent to that of Compact SUVs! With the New Creta coming in; it shall soon overtake Compact SUVs volumes easily. Even in terms of YoY degrowth Mid-SUVs saw a fall of -37% v/s drop of -46% in Compact SUV segment.
Even with the addition of Altroz; the Premium Hatchback segment witnessed a degrowth of -46%. Do note that India’s best selling car for Mar’20 (Baleno) was from this segment. A lot is attributed to the low volumes of i20 (as it witnessing BS6 transition).
The largest drop was seen in the Premium Sedan segment and Honda’s Civic was the biggest reason for it. Honda had relaunched the iconic Civic sedan in the Indian Market last year and saw an impressive response in the initial few months. However; as feared the numbers crashed subsequently and Honda had to even cut of Diesel variant in the model in Mar’20 owing to low volumes. The segment volumes was a mere 184 units in Mar’20 and highlights how the Indian Consumer has dejected the segment as a whole.
