What Helped Tata Motors Overtake Mahindra?
1. Punch and Nexon Strengthen Tata's SUV Position
The Tata Punch and Nexon continue to anchor the company's passenger vehicle portfolio. Both models have established strong positions in India's compact SUV market, enabling Tata to compete effectively across different price segments.
The Punch appeals to buyers looking for an accessible SUV-style vehicle, while the Nexon offers a wider range of powertrain choices. Tata's utility vehicle dispatches reportedly increased by around 59% during H1 FY27, highlighting the contribution of its SUV portfolio.
2. Multiple Powertrain Options Expand Tata's Reach
A major competitive advantage for Tata Motors is its diversified powertrain strategy.
The company offers petrol, diesel, CNG and electric options across different models, allowing it to address a wider range of consumer requirements.
Its CNG offerings include models such as the Tiago, Tigor, Punch, Altroz and Nexon, while its expanding electric vehicle portfolio further strengthens its presence in alternative-fuel mobility. This variety gives Tata an advantage in attracting buyers across urban, semi-urban and fleet-oriented markets.
3. Product Updates Support Growth
Refreshed products and continued portfolio expansion have helped Tata Motors sustain consumer interest.
Rather than relying on a single high-volume model, Tata benefits from participation across hatchbacks, compact SUVs, midsize SUVs and electric vehicles. This wider market coverage gives the manufacturer additional opportunities to capture buyers as consumer preferences evolve.
Mahindra Remains a Strong SUV Contender
Despite slipping to third position in overall passenger vehicle dispatches, Mahindra continues to expand its SUV business.
The company recorded 3,58,142 domestic passenger vehicle dispatches in H1 FY27, compared with 2,97,570 units a year earlier, representing growth of approximately 20.4%.vMahindra's portfolio includes popular SUV nameplates such as the Scorpio, Thar, XUV 3XO and XUV700 family, alongside its newer electric-origin SUVs.
Its BE and XEV electric SUV range recorded combined dispatches of 42,338 units during the six-month period, an increase of approximately 82% year-on-year.
Electric-origin SUVs accounted for around 11.8% of Mahindra's passenger vehicle dispatches, demonstrating the growing importance of electric mobility to its business.
Mahindra's slower growth relative to the overall industry resulted in a decline in market share, but its expanding electric SUV portfolio could play an important role in the competition ahead.
Maruti Suzuki Remains India's Largest Carmaker
While Tata and Mahindra compete for second position, Maruti Suzuki continues to lead India's passenger vehicle market by a substantial margin.
Maruti Suzuki recorded approximately 10.80 lakh domestic passenger vehicle dispatches during H1 FY27 and recovered a market share of around 41%. The company's performance was supported by strong demand across its hatchback, sedan, MPV and SUV portfolios.
Maruti's scale and broad distribution network continue to differentiate it from competitors, even as Tata and Mahindra strengthen their positions.
Hyundai Faces Growing Competition
Hyundai Motor India, once the country's consistent second-largest passenger vehicle manufacturer, now faces increasing competition from both Tata Motors and Mahindra.
Its market share declined to 11.57% in H1 FY27, compared with 13.22% in the corresponding period last year.
Despite registering positive sales growth, Hyundai expanded more slowly than the overall market, resulting in a reduction in its share. The development reinforces how rapidly India's passenger vehicle rankings have evolved as domestic manufacturers expand their SUV and alternative-powertrain portfolios.
India's Passenger Vehicle Market Expands 28.3%
India's domestic passenger vehicle wholesales increased from 20,55,122 units in H1 FY26 to 26,37,067 units in H1 FY27, representing growth of 28.3%. Demand growth benefited manufacturers across different segments, although the distribution of gains varied significantly.
Tata Motors and Maruti Suzuki increased their market shares, while Mahindra and Hyundai recorded share declines despite higher dispatch volumes.

Auto Punditz Analysis
Tata Motors' return to second position reflects a broader change in India's passenger vehicle market.
Its combination of high-volume compact SUVs, established hatchbacks, CNG offerings and electric vehicles provides a diversified foundation for growth.
Mahindra, meanwhile, remains a formidable competitor with its SUV-focused positioning, growing electric vehicle business and strong brand recognition.
The next phase of competition will depend on product launches, manufacturing capacity, supply-chain execution and sustained customer demand.
For Tata Motors, the challenge is no longer simply overtaking Mahindra—it is maintaining its lead.
With the gap between the two manufacturers still relatively modest compared with their combined sales volumes, the battle for India's second-largest carmaker position remains open as FY27 progresses.
