Tesla Model Y L Deliveries Begin in India: Six-Seat Electric SUV Reaches Its First Customers

Tesla has commenced customer deliveries of the Model Y L in India, marking the arrival of the company’s more spacious, long-wheelbase electric SUV on Indian roads. The first reported deliveries have taken place in Mumbai, just under two months after Tesla introduced the six-seater variant at a starting price of ₹61.99 lakh, ex-showroom.

Images shared by an early owner show a Model Y L being handed over at Tesla’s Mumbai facility. The vehicle is finished in a light blue-grey exterior shade and features the distinctive extended roofline and longer rear section that differentiate it from the regular five-seat Model Y.

Tesla had announced in April 2026 that deliveries would begin in June, and the latest customer handovers indicate that the company has adhered to the original schedule.

Tesla’s First Six-Seater Offering for India

The Model Y L is the first Tesla sold in India with a three-row, six-seat configuration. The cabin uses a 2+2+2 seating layout, with individual captain seats in the second row and two seats in the third row.

The longer wheelbase has been designed to improve passenger space and make the Model Y more relevant to Indian buyers seeking a premium family vehicle. The second-row seats receive powered armrests, heating, ventilation and one-touch folding, while the third row offers power recline, one-touch folding and dedicated climate vents.

This configuration places the Model Y L closer to the premium three-row SUV segment rather than positioning it merely as a stretched version of the regular Model Y.

Tesla Model Y L: Key Specifications

The India-spec Model Y L is offered with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system and a long-range battery pack.

Tesla claims a WLTP-certified range of 681 km, making the Model Y L the longest-range Model Y currently listed in India. It can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5 seconds, despite weighing 2,088 kg and accommodating three rows of seating.

At a compatible Tesla Supercharger, the SUV can accept up to 250 kW of DC charging. Tesla claims that as much as 288 km of range can be added in 15 minutes under suitable charging and operating conditions.

More Than Just a Longer Model Y

The Model Y L incorporates several changes intended to improve refinement and rear-seat comfort. These include acoustic glass, revised suspension, electronically controlled dampers and Tesla’s new 19-inch Machina wheels.

The cabin also receives an 18-speaker audio system with a subwoofer, a 16-inch central touchscreen and a separate 8-inch touchscreen for second-row passengers. Connected functions include live traffic information, satellite-view navigation, remote camera access and integrated entertainment applications such as Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube and Netflix.

Although its exterior design remains recognisably Model Y, the stretched profile provides a more substantial road presence. The longer roofline also creates additional room behind the second row, addressing one of the practical limitations of compact three-row electric SUVs.

Model Y L Pricing Makes It an Interesting Proposition

The Model Y L is priced at ₹61.99 lakh, ex-showroom. Significantly, it costs only around ₹11 lakh more than the recently introduced Model Y Premium Rear-Wheel Drive, which is priced at ₹50.89 lakh.

For the additional amount, the Model Y L offers:

  • Two additional seats

  • Dual-motor all-wheel drive

  • A higher claimed driving range

  • Faster acceleration

  • More cargo capacity

  • A more comfort-oriented second row

  • Adaptive suspension and additional premium equipment

This pricing strategy makes the Model Y L an important product for Tesla India. Rather than being positioned solely as the most expensive Model Y, it delivers a substantial increase in space, performance and versatility over the entry variant.

Tesla’s India Journey So Far

Tesla formally entered the Indian passenger-vehicle market in July 2025 with the regular Model Y. Deliveries of the five-seat version began in September 2025.

However, the company’s initial volumes remained limited. Reuters reported that Tesla sold approximately 350 Model Y vehicles in India between the commencement of deliveries and April 2026, based on government registration data. Imported-vehicle duties and the resulting premium pricing have restricted Tesla largely to India’s luxury EV segment.

The Model Y L represents an effort to broaden the vehicle’s appeal by aligning it more closely with Indian preferences. Three-row vehicles enjoy strong demand among affluent family buyers, particularly those seeking greater cabin flexibility without moving to a very large SUV.

Charging and Service Network Expansion

Tesla is gradually building the supporting infrastructure required for a larger vehicle population in India. At the time of the Model Y L’s introduction, the company operated five Supercharger locations comprising 20 Superchargers and 14 Wall Connectors.

Tesla has also announced plans for seven additional Supercharger stations along routes connecting major cities such as:

Delhi, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Chennai.

Service centres and body-repair facilities were already operating in Mumbai, Delhi, Gurugram and Pune, with expansion planned for Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai and Ahmedabad.

The Model Y L is covered by a four-year or 80,000 km basic vehicle warranty. Its battery and drive unit carry an eight-year or 1,92,000 km warranty, with a minimum 70% battery-capacity retention guarantee during the coverage period.

Why the Model Y L Could Be More Relevant to India

Tesla’s initial India offering was technologically strong but faced a difficult value equation. At close to ₹60 lakh, the five-seat Model Y competed with established luxury brands offering stronger dealership networks, local service support and more traditional premium interiors.

The Model Y L provides a more India-relevant proposition. Its six-seat layout, captain seats, longer range and large cargo capacity offer tangible benefits for buyers travelling with family members or chauffeurs.

It will compete for attention against luxury electric SUVs as well as premium internal-combustion three-row vehicles. Buyers may compare it with models such as the BMW iX1 Long Wheelbase, Mercedes-Benz EQB, Kia EV9 and premium SUVs including the Toyota Vellfire, depending on their priorities and budgets.

Direct comparisons will not always be straightforward, but the Model Y L’s combination of performance, range and passenger capacity gives Tesla a more differentiated product.

Auto Punditz Take

The beginning of Model Y L deliveries is more important for Tesla India than the addition of another variant. It demonstrates that the company is moving beyond showroom launches and beginning to establish a functioning sales, delivery, charging and service ecosystem.

The six-seat layout is also better aligned with Indian luxury-car usage, where rear-seat comfort and family practicality frequently matter as much as acceleration or software features.

At ₹61.99 lakh, the Model Y L remains a premium imported EV rather than a mass-market product. Nevertheless, its relatively small price premium over the earlier Model Y variants makes it arguably the most complete and compelling Tesla currently offered in India.

The next test will be whether Tesla can maintain a steady supply of vehicles, expand its service footprint and improve charging access beyond Mumbai and Delhi. For now, the sight of customer-owned Model Y Ls leaving Tesla’s delivery centre marks another meaningful step in the American EV manufacturer’s India journey.
