It is gathered that Tesla is planning to open showrooms in 3 cities of India. The cities identified it is gathered are Mumbai, Delhi, and Bengaluru.
The Showrooms could be of size ranging from 20,000 to 30,000 sft. Mr, Manoj Khurana, a former executive of India’s investment promotion body Invest India has been hired by Tesla to lead its policy and business development efforts in India, sources shared. No official comment was shared by Tesla and Mr.Manoj Khurana too refused to confirm the same.
Global property consultant CBRE Group has been hired to search the desired showrooms; and has been scurrying for spaces in this regard.
Luxury Showrooms in the country are usually in the 8000 to 10000 sft sizes and getting showrooms of size 20000 to 30000 sft will be a huge challenge, especially in Mumbai.
Globally, Tesla Showrooms are like Experience Centres. And the company would look at replicating them in India too. Will it look at plush malls, like in China, a possibility that will be answered, when the time comes! India will be a much tougher market than China and the West. Just over 5000 EVs were sold out of a total of 2.4 million cars sold last year. In China, 1.25 million EV cars were sold.
However, Tesla is quite optimistic about making a mark in India, with its growing young, aspiring, and affluent population. Initially, CKDs would be imported and production facilities will come up as the demand grows.
