Kia India has officially revealed the India-spec Sorento and commenced local production of its upcoming premium three-row SUV. The first locally manufactured Sorento rolled out of Kia's Anantapur facility on August 20, 2026, bringing the model one step closer to its scheduled September 4 price announcement.
The Sorento will sit at the top of Kia India's internal-combustion SUV portfolio and represents a significant expansion for the brand beyond its established Sonet and Seltos-led segments. More importantly, Kia has now confirmed that the Sorento will be offered with hybrid as well as diesel powertrains, while an all-wheel-drive system will also be available. Pre-bookings for the SUV are already underway ahead of its formal market launch.

Locally Produced Kia Sorento Rolls Off the Line
Production of the Sorento has commenced at Kia India's Anantapur manufacturing plant, indicating that the company is preparing for deliveries soon after the price announcement.
Kia has described the Sorento as an important addition to its premium portfolio, with the SUV becoming the brand's first hybrid offering for India. The company has also confirmed a diesel engine, giving customers a conventional long-distance powertrain option alongside the electrified version. The localisation strategy could prove particularly important for the Sorento's eventual pricing. While Kia has not disclosed prices yet, market estimates currently place the SUV broadly in the ₹30 lakh–₹40 lakh region.
Kia Sorento Exterior Design
The India-spec Sorento adopts Kia's latest SUV design language and carries several visual cues seen on the larger Carnival. At the front, the SUV features a distinctive headlamp arrangement with four projector units, accompanied by a prominent grille with chrome detailing. Slim LED fog lamps are positioned around the lower air intake, while contrasting skid plates and air curtains add to the SUV's more rugged appearance.
The side profile features dual-tone alloy wheels, black roof rails and brushed aluminium-style detailing extending from the front fenders towards the doors. Chrome accents around the windows and lower body further reinforce its premium positioning.
At the rear, the Sorento receives wraparound LED tail-lamps, an integrated roof spoiler and shark-fin antenna.
Premium Cabin With Dual Displays
The Sorento's interior will be a major part of its premium positioning. The dashboard incorporates a curved display housing dual screens, complemented by a new four-spoke multifunction steering wheel. Kia has opted for a dual-tone beige and black colour scheme for the India-spec SUV.
Equipment confirmed for the Sorento includes:
Panoramic sunroof
360-degree camera
Electrically adjustable front seats
Ventilated front seats
Powered tailgate
Rotary drive selector
Second-row sunshades
Comfort headrests for second-row passengers
Dual-function controls for infotainment and climate functions
ADAS suite
The Sorento is expected to be positioned primarily as a premium family SUV, making cabin comfort and technology crucial to its appeal.
Hybrid and Diesel Engines Confirmed
Kia has confirmed two powertrain routes for India – hybrid and diesel – although detailed engine specifications have not yet been officially announced. The hybrid is particularly significant because the Sorento will become Kia India's first hybrid SUV.
Internationally, the Sorento Hybrid is available with a turbo-petrol engine paired with an electric motor, but the exact specification and output for India should be treated as unconfirmed until Kia releases the full technical details. The availability of a diesel engine could also help the Sorento appeal to customers who regularly undertake highway journeys and currently gravitate towards diesel-powered premium SUVs.
AWD Gives Sorento a Key Differentiator
Kia has additionally confirmed an all-wheel-drive system for the India-spec Sorento.
That could become one of the SUV's strongest selling points, particularly at the upper end of India's premium SUV market where buyers often expect greater capability alongside luxury and technology. AWD also broadens the Sorento's positioning beyond being just a more luxurious three-row crossover.
Live Generative AI to Make Global Debut
Another interesting aspect of the India-spec Sorento is Kia's Live Generative AI technology. Kia says the Sorento launching in India will be the first globally to introduce the Live Generative AI system, giving the Indian model an unusually important role in the brand's global technology rollout. More details about how the system works and the functions it can control are expected closer to launch.

Kia Sorento Rivals in India
Once launched, the Sorento will enter an increasingly competitive premium SUV segment. Its potential alternatives will include the Toyota Fortuner and Fortuner Legender, Skoda Kodiaq, Volkswagen Tayron, MG Gloster and MG Majestor, among other similarly positioned SUVs.
The Sorento's approach, however, is somewhat different. Rather than relying predominantly on a large conventional petrol or diesel engine, Kia will be able to pitch the hybrid version around refinement and efficiency while retaining AWD capability.
Auto Punditz Take
The start of local production changes the Sorento story considerably. Until now, the key discussion was whether Kia could successfully enter India's ₹40 lakh-class SUV market. Local manufacturing potentially gives the company much more flexibility to position the Sorento competitively.
The hybrid + diesel + AWD combination is particularly interesting. Kia is effectively trying to cover two different premium-SUV audiences with one model: buyers who want better efficiency and newer electrified technology, and customers who continue to prefer diesel for long-distance usage.
The Sorento's biggest opportunity could therefore lie somewhere between the urban-focused premium crossovers and traditional body-on-frame SUVs such as the Fortuner.
Live Generative AI, ADAS, dual screens and a feature-rich cabin will help with showroom appeal, but pricing will ultimately decide how disruptive the Sorento can be.
If Kia manages to position the hybrid aggressively below the ₹30 lakh mark while maintaining meaningful localisation, the Sorento could emerge as one of the most interesting new alternatives in India's premium three-row SUV market. With production now underway, all attention shifts to September 4, 2026, when Kia will reveal the final variant structure, detailed engine specifications and prices.
