Tata Motors, Drivn Partner to Deploy Over 1,000 Electric Trucks in India

Tata Motors has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with EV leasing platform Drivn to explore leasing-based deployment of electric commercial vehicles in India. The partnership is aimed at making electric trucks more accessible to fleet operators through customised leasing and financing solutions.

One of the biggest highlights of the partnership is Drivn's plan to deploy more than 1,000 electric trucks over the next two years, potentially giving Tata Motors' electric commercial vehicle portfolio a significant push among logistics and fleet operators.

Leasing Model Could Lower EV Adoption Barriers

Electric commercial vehicles can offer compelling operating benefits, but the higher initial acquisition cost and challenges associated with charging infrastructure, deployment and fleet management can make the transition difficult for operators.

Through the new partnership, Drivn will offer customised operating lease solutions for Tata Motors' electric commercial vehicles. The objective is to reduce the financial burden associated with outright vehicle purchases while giving operators a more structured route towards fleet electrification.

Drivn's business model goes beyond vehicle financing. The company says its EV leasing ecosystem also covers areas such as charging infrastructure planning, battery lifecycle management, fleet operations and end-of-life solutions.

This approach could be particularly relevant for fleet operators where vehicle uptime,

predictable costs and utilisation levels have a direct impact on profitability.

Over 1,000 Tata Electric Trucks Planned

According to Drivn CEO and Co-founder Manav Bansal, the partnership is designed to address barriers including upfront costs and deployment timelines.

Drivn intends to deploy over 1,000 electric trucks during the next two years under the partnership, targeting commercial operators looking for a scalable transition towards electric mobility.

The scale of the proposed deployment makes the agreement particularly noteworthy. Rather than being restricted to a pilot programme or a small fleet trial, the partnership could translate into a sizeable number of electric commercial vehicles entering real-world fleet operations.

Tata Motors Expands Electric Truck Portfolio

Tata Motors has also broadened its electric commercial vehicle offering. The company has introduced electric trucks spanning the 7-tonne to 55-tonne range, built on its new I-MOEV – Intelligent Modular Electric Vehicle – architecture under the Tata

Trucks.ev brand. These electric trucks are intended for multiple applications, including:

  • E-commerce and logistics

  • Construction material transportation

  • Port operations

Tata Motors says its EV strategy is also supported by expanding charging infrastructure and its nationwide service network.

The broader weight range is important because electrification of commercial vehicles cannot follow a one-size-fits-all approach. Duty cycles, payload requirements, daily running distances and charging opportunities vary considerably between urban logistics vehicles and heavy trucks.

Tata Motors Focuses on Total EV Ecosystem

Tata Motors is positioning its electric commercial vehicle business around more than just vehicle supply. The company says it is working with fleet customers across areas including vehicle performance, uptime, charging and financing over the operating lifecycle.

Rajesh Kaul, Vice President & Business Head – Trucks, Tata Motors, said the collaboration with Drivn is intended to make electric trucks more accessible while meeting fleet requirements around performance, reliability and operating economics.

Drivn Co-founder and Chief Business Officer Alpna Jain also highlighted the importance of combining vehicle maintenance, uptime commitments and technology-based efficiency monitoring as electric fleets scale up.

Why Leasing Could Accelerate Electric Truck Adoption

The economics of electric commercial vehicles differ substantially from those of passenger EVs.

For a commercial fleet, the purchase decision is closely linked to total operating cost, utilisation, downtime and predictability of expenses. Leasing can potentially shift part of the risk associated with vehicle acquisition and asset ownership away from fleet operators while converting a large upfront investment into a more predictable operating expense.

That makes partnerships between vehicle manufacturers and specialised EV leasing companies increasingly relevant as India's commercial vehicle market gradually moves towards electrification.

For Tata Motors, the Drivn partnership could also create another route for putting its newly expanded electric truck portfolio into customer fleets without relying solely on conventional vehicle purchases.

Auto Punditz Take

The 1,000+ electric truck deployment target is the most important aspect of the Tata Motors-Drivn agreement.

Electric trucks arguably face a tougher adoption challenge than electric passenger cars because fleet operators evaluate vehicles primarily on utilisation, uptime and total cost of ownership. Even when operating economics favour electrification, the higher upfront investment can slow purchase decisions.

A leasing-led model directly addresses that barrier.

The more interesting development will therefore be how quickly the proposed 1,000-truck deployment translates into actual fleet operations and which applications emerge as the earliest large-scale adopters.

Tata Motors' newly expanded 7-tonne to 55-tonne electric truck portfolio gives the partnership considerably more flexibility because deployment can potentially extend beyond urban delivery operations into heavier logistics, construction and port applications.

If leasing providers can combine competitive financing with dependable charging, maintenance and uptime support, fleet electrification could move from isolated pilot projects towards larger commercial deployments.
