Top 10 Cars in India for FY2021!

The Top 10 cars sold 12,97,023 units collectively in FY2021 and contributed to about 47% of the overall sales in India! Maruti Suzuki ruled the list with the 7 out of the top 10 from their stable. Also, note that the Top 5 was dominated by Maruti Suzuki models alone!

  • Maruti Swift emerged as India's Best Selling Car for FY2021 with sales of over 1.72 Lakh units. It toppled last FY's bestseller Alto by quite a margin to rank at top of the table. The sales however fell -8% YoY.

  • India's second best-selling car from Maruti Suzuki's Nexa channel - Baleno. The model has performed extremely well for Nexa and moved up to second rank in FY2021 from Third in FY2020. Do note that Baleno+Glanza would move to the No.1 position!

  • Wagon R still rides on practicality and rakes in volumes for Maruti Suzuki. The model ranked third in the table with sales of over 1.6 Lakhs. It was also the only model in the Top 5 to post a YoY growth.

  • FY2020's best-selling car Alto dropped to the fourth position in FY2021. The model volumes dropped -17% YoY.

  • Maruti Dzire sales dropped the highest in FY2021 v/s FY2020. The primary reason was the unavailability of a diesel engine option and declining taxi sales.

  • Hyundai Creta was the best-selling SUV for FY2021. It was also Hyundai's highest-selling model for FY2021. The Creta sales skyrocketed 46% YoY and sold over 1.2 Lakh units in FY2021.

  • India's only van - Eeco ranked seventh in the list and the model volumes fell -10% YoY.

  • Hyundai i10 Grand sales increased 1% YoY and stood eighth in the ranking table. It was the second best-selling model in Hyundai's portfolio for FY2021.

  • Maruti's Brezza was the second best-selling SUV for FY2021 and the sales dipped -14% YoY. The unavailability of diesel was a sure deterrent for the model. However; it retained its No.1 Selling Compact SUV tag.

  • Hyundai's Venue followed close to Brezza and ended up in the tenth spot. The model volumes was almost flat in FY2021 vs FY2020.

  • Interestingly, only 3 cars ( Hyundai Creta, Hyundai i10 & Maruti Wagon R ) registered growth over Last year's volumes.

The Top 10 list is now very predictable and is dominated by Maruti & Hyundai models. We need to wait and see if the trend changes in FY2022 - but the possibility seems rare.
