World’s Largest Automakers by Employees: Mahindra Leads India, Tata Motors Follows

The global automobile industry is among the world’s biggest employment generators, supporting millions of jobs across manufacturing, engineering, sales, R&D, logistics, software, finance and after-sales networks. While market capitalisation and vehicle sales volumes often dominate automotive rankings, employee strength offers a different perspective: it shows the scale of operations, manufacturing depth and organisational spread of carmakers.

As per CompaniesMarketCap’s ranking of publicly traded automakers by number of employees, the world’s top 60 listed automakers together employ over 5.16 million people. The list is led by China’s BYD, followed by Volkswagen and Toyota. Interestingly, Indian automakers also have a strong presence, with Mahindra & Mahindra ranking among the top five globally by employee strength.

BYD Leads the World With Nearly 1 Million Employees

BYD tops the global list with 968,900 employees, making it the largest publicly traded automaker by workforce size. The Chinese EV and battery giant has scaled rapidly across electric vehicles, batteries, electronics and new energy solutions, which explains its massive employment base.

Volkswagen ranks second with 656,134 employees, reflecting the group’s wide global footprint across brands such as Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche, Skoda, SEAT/Cupra, Bentley, Lamborghini and commercial vehicles.

Toyota, the world’s largest automaker by sales volume, ranks third in employee strength with 389,144 employees. The Japanese giant continues to maintain a vast global production, engineering and supply chain ecosystem spread across markets.

Mahindra & Mahindra: India’s Highest-Ranked Automaker

Mahindra & Mahindra is the highest-ranked Indian automaker on the list, placed fourth globally with 260,000 employees. This is a significant achievement, as Mahindra ranks ahead of several global automotive giants including Stellantis, Honda, Ford, Mercedes-Benz, General Motors, BMW and Tesla in terms of workforce size.

However, it is important to note that Mahindra’s employee count is not limited to its passenger vehicle business. The figure includes the company’s broader automotive and farm equipment operations, covering SUVs, commercial vehicles, tractors and allied businesses. Mahindra is not just a passenger vehicle manufacturer; it is also one of India’s strongest players in commercial vehicles and the world’s largest tractor manufacturer by volume.

This diversified business model explains why Mahindra’s employee base is much larger than pure passenger vehicle-focused manufacturers. In the Indian automotive space, Mahindra has emerged as one of the strongest SUV-focused players, with models such as the Scorpio-N, XUV700, Thar, Bolero and XUV 3XO contributing to its domestic momentum. The company is also scaling up its EV ambitions through the BE and XEV brands.

Tata Motors Ranks 17th Globally

Tata Motors is the second Indian automaker on the list, ranked 17th globally with 86,259 employees. Tata Motors’ workforce scale is backed by its wide presence across passenger vehicles, electric vehicles, commercial vehicles and global operations.

The company has played a major role in India’s EV transition, with models such as the Nexon EV, Punch EV, Tiago EV and Tigor EV making electric mobility more accessible. On the commercial vehicle side, Tata Motors remains one of India’s most important players across trucks, buses, small commercial vehicles and fleet solutions.

Tata Motors’ ranking also reflects its broader automotive footprint across domestic and international markets. Like Mahindra, Tata Motors cannot be viewed only through the lens of passenger vehicles, as its commercial vehicle business remains a core part of the company’s scale and employment base.

Maruti Suzuki India: Leaner Workforce, Massive Output

Maruti Suzuki India ranks 39th globally with 16,259 employees. While its employee count is much lower than Mahindra and Tata Motors, Maruti’s scale in production and sales remains unmatched in India’s passenger vehicle market.

This highlights an important point: employee strength does not directly equal sales volume. Maruti Suzuki operates with a highly efficient manufacturing and supplier ecosystem. The company has consistently remained India’s largest passenger vehicle manufacturer, supported by high-volume models, strong vendor integration and one of the country’s deepest sales and service networks.

Maruti’s workforce number appears lean when compared with its output, underlining its operational efficiency and mature manufacturing model.

Force Motors Also Features in the Global List

Force Motors is another Indian automaker present in the ranking, placed 47th with 3,928 employees. The Pune-based manufacturer has a niche but important presence in India’s automotive sector, especially in vans, commercial vehicles, utility vehicles and contract manufacturing.

Force Motors is also known for its manufacturing partnerships and engineering capabilities, including powertrain and vehicle assembly operations for premium brands in India.

What the Ranking Tells Us About India

The presence of multiple Indian automakers in the global list shows the growing importance of India as an automotive manufacturing hub. India is already one of the world’s largest automobile markets, and its role is expanding further due to rising exports, localisation, EV manufacturing, battery ecosystem development and supplier base expansion.

Mahindra’s fourth-place global ranking is particularly notable. It shows how Indian automotive groups are no longer just domestic players; they are large, diversified organisations with significant employment footprints across passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, tractors, farm equipment and allied sectors.

Tata Motors’ position reinforces its importance across both passenger and commercial mobility, while Maruti Suzuki’s leaner workforce demonstrates how scale can also be achieved through efficient manufacturing systems and supplier partnerships.

Employee Count vs Sales Volume: Two Different Stories

It is important to note that employee count should not be confused with vehicle sales, revenue or profitability. A company with a larger employee base may be more diversified, vertically integrated or spread across multiple business areas. A company with fewer employees may still produce and sell more vehicles through automation, outsourcing or a stronger supplier network.

For example, Maruti Suzuki has a much smaller employee base than Mahindra & Mahindra and Tata Motors in this ranking, but it remains India’s largest passenger carmaker by sales volume. Similarly, BYD’s massive workforce reflects not just vehicle manufacturing, but also its battery and electronics ecosystem.

This is especially relevant while reading the Indian rankings. Mahindra’s employee figure includes its wider automotive and farm equipment businesses, including commercial vehicles and tractors. Tata Motors’ number also includes its commercial vehicle operations. Maruti Suzuki, on the other hand, is primarily focused on passenger vehicles in India, which makes its employee base structurally different from Mahindra and Tata Motors.

Conclusion

The global automaker employee ranking gives a fresh perspective on the scale of the automobile industry. BYD’s rise to the top reflects the growing dominance of Chinese EV and battery-led manufacturing. Volkswagen and Toyota continue to showcase the depth of traditional global automotive giants.

For India, the standout story is Mahindra & Mahindra ranking fourth globally by employee strength, ahead of several established international automakers. However, this ranking should be read with the right context: Mahindra’s workforce includes its SUV, commercial vehicle, tractor and farm equipment operations, not just its passenger vehicle business.

Tata Motors, Maruti Suzuki and Force Motors further highlight the diversity of India’s automotive ecosystem — from SUVs and EVs to mass-market cars, commercial vehicles, tractors and contract manufacturing. As India moves towards electrification, localisation and export-led growth, the country’s automakers are likely to become even more important employers in the global mobility landscape.
