TVS VMS Enters Electric Trucking With Montra Electric; 57 Rhino eHCVs Deployed, 300+ Planned in FY27

TVS Vehicle Mobility Solutions (TVS VMS) has entered the electric heavy-trucking segment for the first time through a strategic partnership with Montra Electric’s eM&HCV division. The collaboration begins with the deployment of 57 Montra Electric Rhino 5538 EV heavy-duty trucks, while the two companies are targeting more than 300 electric trucks during FY 2026-27.


The partnership marks an important shift for TVS VMS, which has decades of experience operating conventional commercial vehicles and is now moving part of its freight operations towards zero-emission trucking. The first batch of 57 Montra Electric Rhino 5538 EV 4x2 TT electric heavy commercial vehicles was showcased at Manesar on August 8, 2026, ahead of deployment into live freight operations.

57 Montra Rhino Electric Trucks to Start Operations in Chhattisgarh

Under the first phase of the programme, TVS VMS will deploy the electric trucks on a primary logistics route in Chhattisgarh. The vehicles will operate over a 190 km lead distance, with the route supported by three dedicated charging stations positioned to maintain fleet uptime and operational continuity.


Unlike pilot programmes involving demonstration vehicles, the Rhino trucks will be used for regular commercial freight operations, making the deployment an important test of electric heavy commercial vehicles under demanding real-world logistics conditions. For fleet operators, the ability of an electric truck to deliver predictable uptime, payload capability and charging availability can be just as important as the vehicle's outright driving range.


TVS VMS Makes Its First Move Into Electric Heavy Trucking

The collaboration is particularly significant because TVS VMS is entering electric trucking after several decades of operating conventional fossil-fuel-powered commercial vehicles. Heavy-duty trucking remains one of the more challenging segments to electrify because trucks frequently operate with high payloads, long running hours and tight delivery schedules.


Through the Montra Electric partnership, TVS VMS is looking to combine electric vehicles with a broader fleet-management ecosystem covering vehicle leasing, driver operations, maintenance, insurance, charging infrastructure and connected telematics. According to Madhu Raghunath, CEO of TVS Vehicle Mobility Solutions, the company's end-to-end lifecycle management platform will support the transition towards commercially viable zero-emission fleet operations.


More Than 300 Electric Trucks Planned in FY 2026-27

The 57-truck deployment is only the first stage of the partnership.

Montra Electric and TVS VMS have announced plans to deploy more than 300 electric trucks during FY 2026-27.


If executed as planned, the programme could become a sizeable commercial deployment of electric heavy-duty trucks in India and provide useful operating data around vehicle utilisation, charging infrastructure, maintenance costs and Total Cost of Ownership.


Electric trucks have the potential to significantly reduce diesel consumption and tailpipe emissions, particularly on predictable hub-to-hub freight corridors where charging infrastructure can be planned around fixed routes. For logistics operators, however, adoption is ultimately expected to depend on whether electric vehicles can provide competitive lifecycle economics without compromising fleet availability.


Montra Electric Rhino 5538 EV: Battery, Power and Torque

The vehicle selected for the project is the Montra Electric Rhino 5538 EV 4x2 TT, manufactured at Montra Electric's IPL Tech Electric facility in Manesar. The Rhino is a heavy-duty electric tractor-trailer with a 55-tonne Gross Combination Weight (GCW) and has been developed for demanding freight applications. Power comes from a 282 kWh Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery pack paired with a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor.

The stated range of up to 198 km has been tested using a duty cycle involving one-way loaded and one-way empty operation, intended to more closely represent actual freight usage than a purely unloaded range figure.


Fast Charging and Battery-Swapping Options

Montra Electric offers the Rhino 5538 EV in two configurations.

  • The standard fixed-battery version supports fast charging and can replenish the battery from 20% to 100% in around 60 minutes, according to the company.

  • A second version incorporates a battery-swapping system capable of replacing the battery pack in under six minutes.

The latter could be particularly useful for high-utilisation logistics routes, where lengthy charging downtime can negatively affect vehicle productivity. Combined with strategically located charging or swapping infrastructure, such solutions could allow electric trucks to operate on repeatable industrial freight corridors with relatively predictable energy requirements.


Electric Heavy Trucks Face Their Biggest Test in Real-World Freight

Electric passenger vehicles and smaller commercial vehicles have already gained increasing acceptance in India, but electrifying heavy trucks presents a different challenge. Payload, charging time, battery weight, vehicle utilisation and infrastructure availability all have a significant impact on the economics of a heavy commercial vehicle.

This makes fleet deployments involving established logistics companies particularly important.


Jalaj Gupta, Managing Director of Montra Electric, said TVS VMS putting Montra's trucks into live freight operations represented validation of the company's electric-truck technology at commercial scale. Montra Electric said the deployment includes route-specific charging planning as well as the use of telematics to monitor and optimise fleet performance.


Navneet Sethi, CEO of Montra Electric's eM&HCV Division, also highlighted the importance of proving electric HCV capability in applications involving sustained heavy-load transportation.


Why the TVS VMS-Montra Electric Partnership Matters

India's road freight ecosystem continues to rely overwhelmingly on diesel-powered trucks, making heavy-duty transportation an important area for future emission reduction. Electric HCV adoption, however, is likely to progress differently from passenger EV adoption.


Rather than relying primarily on a nationwide public charging network, heavy electric trucks can initially be deployed on fixed or predictable freight corridors, where operators know the daily distance travelled and can install charging infrastructure at strategic locations. The TVS VMS deployment follows this model: a defined 190 km freight route supported by three dedicated charging stations. This approach allows charging infrastructure, fleet scheduling and energy consumption to be optimised together rather than treating the electric truck as a standalone product.

The significance of this partnership goes beyond the deployment of 57 trucks.

An experienced logistics operator such as TVS VMS moving electric HCVs into routine commercial freight operations represents an important step in determining whether battery-electric trucks can deliver competitive economics in India's heavy-duty logistics sector.


The next phase will be even more important. With 300+ electric trucks targeted during FY27, the programme should generate substantially more real-world data on operating costs, charging requirements, vehicle uptime and battery performance.

If the economics prove favourable, similar route-based deployments could accelerate electrification across industries such as steel, mining, ports, cement and large-scale industrial logistics.


For Montra Electric, meanwhile, the partnership provides an opportunity to demonstrate that the Rhino platform can move beyond limited trials and operate as part of a large commercial fleet.
