Yamaha Bets on Ethanol with the New FZ Blue Flex
India Yamaha Motor has officially launched the Yamaha FZ Blue Flex, its first flex-fuel motorcycle capable of operating on ethanol-blended fuels ranging from E20 to E85. Priced at ₹1,24,240 (ex-showroom), the motorcycle aligns with the Government of India's push towards cleaner, domestically produced alternative fuels and reduced dependence on conventional petrol.
With this launch, Yamaha joins a growing list of manufacturers investing in flex-fuel technology, following similar initiatives from Hero MotoCorp and Suzuki.

Engine Tuned for E85 Compatibility
Powering the FZ Blue Flex is a 149cc, air-cooled, single-cylinder Blue Core engine that has been specifically calibrated to handle higher ethanol content without compromising reliability.
Engine Specifications
Engine: 149cc, Air-cooled, Single-cylinder
Power: 11.7 PS
Torque: 12.8 Nm
Transmission: 5-speed manual
Fuel Compatibility: E20 to E85 ethanol blends
Compared to the conventional FZ, the flex-fuel version develops slightly lower output due to the engine calibration required for ethanol compatibility.
What Makes the FZ Blue Flex Different?
Mechanically, Yamaha has upgraded multiple fuel-system components to withstand the corrosive nature of higher ethanol blends. The motorcycle features revised engine mapping, ethanol-compatible fuel lines and seals, and ECU calibration designed to automatically adapt to varying ethanol concentrations.
Visually, the motorcycle remains familiar to existing FZ owners while receiving Blue Flex graphics and branding that distinguish it from the standard model.
Features
The Yamaha FZ Blue Flex continues to offer features that have made the FZ range popular among urban commuters:
LED headlamp
Fully digital instrument console
Bluetooth connectivity through Yamaha Y-Connect
Single-channel ABS
Front and rear disc brakes
Alloy wheels with tubeless tyres
Why Flex-Fuel Matters
Flex-fuel vehicles can operate on fuels containing a much higher percentage of ethanol than conventional petrol vehicles.
Benefits include:
Lower dependence on imported crude oil
Reduced tailpipe emissions
Better utilisation of domestically produced biofuels
Increased support for India's agricultural ethanol ecosystem
The Indian government has been encouraging OEMs to develop E85-compatible vehicles as part of its long-term clean mobility roadmap.
Auto Punditz Take
The Yamaha FZ Blue Flex may not deliver higher performance than the standard FZ, but that isn't its objective. Instead, it represents Yamaha's commitment to India's evolving fuel landscape and sustainable mobility initiatives.
As ethanol infrastructure expands across the country, flex-fuel motorcycles could emerge as a practical bridge between traditional ICE motorcycles and full electrification.
For everyday commuters, the FZ Blue Flex offers a familiar riding experience while
being ready for the next generation of cleaner fuels.
Whether flex-fuel motorcycles become mainstream will largely depend on the nationwide availability of E85 fuel, but Yamaha has ensured it is prepared well ahead of the curve.
