Ather Konarc Coming on August 29 – New Affordable Family EV Could Start Around ₹1 Lakh

Ather Energy is preparing for its next major expansion in India’s electric two-wheeler market. The Bengaluru-based EV manufacturer has confirmed “Konarc” as the name of its upcoming family-oriented electric scooter, which will make its debut on August 29, 2026, at the fourth edition of Ather Community Day.


More importantly, Konarc will become the first production scooter based on Ather’s new EL platform, an architecture developed specifically to support more scalable and cost-efficient electric scooters.


For Ather, the Konarc could therefore be much more than another addition to its portfolio. It represents the company’s attempt to expand deeper into India's high-volume electric scooter market, below its more premium 450 range and alongside the family-focused Rizta.

Ather Konarc: What Has Been Confirmed?

Ather has now revealed the Konarc name through official teasers ahead of its August 29 unveiling. The scooter is expected to be positioned as an affordable, practical family EV, with multiple reports indicating a starting price around the ₹1 lakh mark, although Ather has not announced final prices yet.


The biggest development, however, is underneath the bodywork.

Konarc will introduce Ather's EL architecture to production. The platform was previewed through the EL01 concept at Ather Community Day 2025 and has been designed to underpin multiple types of scooters rather than a single model.

It is important to note that the 2-5 kWh figure represents the capability of the EL platform, and should not yet be interpreted as confirmation that Konarc itself will be offered with every battery size in this range.


EL Platform Could Be the Real Game Changer

Ather's existing products have largely occupied the premium end of India's electric scooter market. EL changes that strategy.


The modular architecture has been developed to accommodate batteries ranging from 2 kWh to 5 kWh, potentially allowing Ather to build everything from relatively inexpensive urban commuters to larger, longer-range scooters on the same underlying architecture.


Ather has also designed the architecture around manufacturing efficiency and component simplification. According to previously disclosed details, EL uses a steel unibody structure and introduces a new Charge Drive Controller, which combines the onboard charger and motor controller into one unit. This can reduce component complexity while also eliminating the requirement for a bulky portable charger, potentially freeing up useful storage space.


These improvements matter considerably for Konarc because manufacturing cost will be critical if Ather intends to compete aggressively around the ₹1 lakh price point.


New Advanced Electronic Braking System

Another significant technology associated with the EL architecture is Ather's Advanced Electronic Braking System (AEBS). The system has been designed to help shorten braking distances while reducing the chances of rear-wheel lock-up. This could bring an additional layer of electronic safety to relatively affordable electric scooters without necessarily requiring expensive hardware. The production specifications and feature availability on individual Konarc variants, however, remain to be confirmed.


Family-Focused Design

Unlike the sporty Ather 450 series, Konarc appears to take a considerably more conventional approach.


Test prototypes of the EL-based scooter have already been spotted on Indian roads. They indicate a practical step-through design with a longer wheelbase and wider seat than the 450X, characteristics aimed squarely at family buyers. Ather's teasers also indicate a distinctly different styling language, including prominent lighting signatures at both ends.


The EL01 concept previously showcased a 14-inch front and 12-inch rear wheel, swingarm-mounted motor and a 7-inch TFT display. These provide a useful indication of what the production Konarc could offer, but final specifications will only become clear at the unveiling. A larger front wheel could prove particularly useful on India's uneven urban roads while retaining a smaller rear wheel could help optimise packaging and under-seat storage.


Konarc vs Rizta: Why Does Ather Need Another Family Scooter?

This is perhaps the most interesting question surrounding the new product.

The Rizta already serves as Ather's family scooter, so Konarc isn't simply intended to duplicate it.

Instead, the EL platform gives Ather an opportunity to address a lower price band and significantly larger customer base.

The likely portfolio structure could therefore evolve into:

450 Series → performance and technology-focused premium scooter

Rizta → premium family scooter

Konarc → affordable mass-market family scooter

Such positioning would allow Ather to compete across a much broader section of India's rapidly expanding electric two-wheeler market.


Expected Price Could Be Konarc's Biggest Weapon

Pricing will ultimately determine how disruptive Konarc becomes.

Reports currently suggest that the first EL-based scooter could be positioned around ₹1 lakh to ₹1.25 lakh, although Ather has not officially announced variant-wise prices. Some reports specifically point toward a starting price close to ₹1 lakh.


If Ather manages to achieve that positioning while retaining its software ecosystem, connected technology and ownership experience, Konarc could significantly expand the addressable market for the company.


It would also bring Ather into much more direct competition with high-volume electric scooters such as the TVS iQube, Bajaj Chetak and VIDA VX2, rather than primarily competing at the premium end of the segment.


EL Could Eventually Spawn Multiple Ather Scooters

Konarc is only the beginning of Ather's EL strategy.

The architecture was deliberately designed to support different body styles, battery capacities and use cases. Earlier information surrounding the platform outlined possibilities including a family scooter, sport-oriented scooter and larger maxi-scooter, potentially allowing Ather to create an entire product family from EL.


Interestingly, Ather's official trademark list already contains several newer names alongside EL and EL01, although trademark filings alone should not be interpreted as confirmation of future production models.


That scalability could become critical as Ather attempts to grow volumes without developing an entirely new architecture for every product.


Auto Punditz Take

The Ather Konarc could be one of Ather Energy's most strategically important launches yet.


The 450 established Ather as a technology-led electric scooter manufacturer, while Rizta allowed it to move into the family scooter category. Konarc and the EL platform could now provide the third piece of the puzzle — scale. Instead of competing primarily on performance and premium features, Ather can use EL's modular construction, simpler manufacturing and scalable battery architecture to address India's much larger value-conscious scooter market.


The crucial factors will be final pricing, real-world range, battery options, storage space and the features retained on entry-level variants. Those answers should arrive on August 29, 2026, when Ather officially takes the wraps off the Konarc at Community Day.
