India’s passenger vehicle market experienced negative growth in August 2025, with wholesale dispatches declining to 327,719 units from 354,273 units in August 2024. The sales remained cautious ahead of the GST rate revisions and the festive season. Heavy rains and monsoon disruptions also impacted retail sales and footfalls at dealerships.
Aug'25 growth was subdued as customers delayed purchases, anticipating clarity on GST revisions and better festive offers in September–October. August 2025 was more of a transitional month for India’s automotive market. While passenger vehicle sales grew marginally, several OEMs faced short-term headwinds. Toyota, MG, and Skoda bucked the trend with positive growth, while Tata and Maruti realigned strategies ahead of the festive wave.

Maruti Suzuki posted a drop of 8.2% in domestic sales for August 2025 vs the same period last year. It managed a >40% Market Share in Aug'25.
Hyundai bounced back to the No.2 position in Aug'25 with a YoY degrowth of 11.2% and a flat growth vs last month.
Tata Motors, meanwhile, saw a mixed performance in August. The OEM's total passenger vehicle sales, including exports, stood at 43,315 units, down 3% on a YoY basis. Domestic volumes were lower at 41,001 units. The bright spot for Tata was clearly in its EV range, which registered a 44% increase in sales compared to last year. Models such as the Nexon EV, Tiago EV, and Punch EV drove this growth, even as ICE models experienced slower demand. The Punch family, spanning ICE, CNG, and EV powertrains, remained Tata’s best-selling nameplate for the month.
Mahindra & Mahindra slipped to the fourth position as the automaker held the dispatches, as the overall momentum was subdued for supply chain adjustments, and a tendency among customers to defer purchases until the festive season weighed on volumes.
One of the standout performances of the month came from MG Motor India. The company achieved its best-ever monthly sales in India, delivering 6,578 units in August, a sharp 44% increase YoY.
