India’s electric passenger vehicle market recorded a healthy sequential improvement in May 2026, with the 24 electric cars together accounting for 26,620 units, compared to 24,592 units in April 2026. This translated into an 8% month-on-month growth, indicating stronger demand across compact EVs, electric SUVs and newer models.
The Tata Punch EVÂ emerged as the best-selling electric car in India in May 2026, followed closely by the Mahindra 9S. Tata Motors continued to dominate the electric car space with six models in the list, while Mahindra, MG and VinFast also had a strong presence.

Tata Punch EV secured the No. 1 position with 3,681 units in May 2026. Its volumes increased from 3,225 units in April 2026, registering a 14% MoM growth.
Mahindra & Mahindra’s 9S ranked second with 3,502 units in May 2026, up from 3,242 units in April 2026. The model recorded an 8% MoM growth, keeping it very close to the Punch EV. The 9S has quickly emerged as one of the strongest performers in the electric passenger vehicle market and reflects Mahindra’s growing strength in the EV space.
Tata Nexon EV continued to remain one of India’s most consistent electric cars. It ranked third with 2,649 units, compared to 2,499 units in April 2026, marking a 6% MoM increase.
MG Windsor ranked fourth with 2,032 units in May 2026. However, its volumes declined sharply from 3,296 units in April 2026, resulting in a 38% MoM drop.
Mahindra XEV 9e ranked fifth with 1,939 units, growing 20% MoM from 1,611 units in April 2026. Mahindra had five models in the top 24 list — 9S, XEV 9e, BE6, XUV3XO and XUV400. Together, these models helped M&M strengthen its position as one of the biggest challengers to Tata Motors in India’s EV passenger vehicle market.
Tata Harrier EV ranked sixth with 1,833 units, up 8% MoM from 1,690 units in April 2026. The Harrier EV added further strength to Tata’s electric SUV portfolio.
MG ZS EV posted one of the strongest improvements among higher-volume models. It sold 1,562 units in May 2026, compared to 717 units in April 2026, registering a sharp 118% MoM growth.
Maruti Suzuki eVitara ranked eighth with 1,439 units in May 2026. However, sales declined from 2,006 units in April 2026, resulting in a 28% MoM drop.
Tata Curvv EV ranked ninth with 1,288 units, growing 46% MoM from 882 units in April 2026. This indicates improving traction for Tata’s coupe-SUV EV offering.
VinFast Limo Green completed the top 10 with 1,026 units, up from 683 units in April 2026, recording a 50% MoM growth. VinFast had four models in the top 24 list, showing that the new entrant is gradually building visibility in India’s electric car market.
