Best selling sub-4m SUVs July 2026 led by Tata Punch, Maruti Suzuki Fronx and Tata Nexon
Tata Punch emerged as India’s best-selling sub-4m SUV in July 2026 with 21,313 units, ahead of the Maruti Suzuki Fronx and Tata Nexon.

Top 3 SUVs Capture Half of the Market

One of the biggest takeaways from July is the concentration of sales among the segment leaders.

The Tata Punch, Maruti Suzuki Fronx and Tata Nexon together accounted for:

  • 58,257 units

  • 50% of total segment volumes

Add the Brezza and Venue, and the top five models accounted for nearly 70% of all sub-4m SUV sales during July 2026. This demonstrates just how strongly consumer demand is concentrated around a relatively small group of established models.

Sub-4m SUV Segment Grows 35% YoY

The overall performance remains particularly noteworthy. From 86,544 units in July 2025, sales increased to 1,16,552 units in July 2026, representing growth of 34.7% YoY. Thirteen of the 14 models in the ranking registered positive year-on-year growth, with the Brezza being the sole exception.

The Tata Punch’s near doubling of volumes, combined with strong gains from Fronx, Nexon, Venue and XUV 3XO, was instrumental in driving the segment’s overall expansion.

Auto Punditz Take

The sub-4m SUV category remains one of the most fiercely contested parts of India’s passenger vehicle market, but July 2026 clearly belonged to Tata Motors.

Punch and Nexon together controlled roughly one-third of the segment, while the Punch itself nearly doubled its year-ago volumes. Maruti Suzuki remains Tata’s closest challenger through the Fronx and Brezza, while Hyundai, Mahindra and Kia continue to command meaningful volumes.

With 1.17 lakh units dispatched in a single month and sales growing nearly 35% YoY, the numbers underline the continuing shift of Indian buyers towards compact SUVs and SUV-inspired crossovers.
