BKT and Pirelli Join Hands for 50:50 JV to Manufacture Passenger Car Tyres in India

3 min read

Balkrishna Industries (BKT) and Italian tyre manufacturer Pirelli have signed agreements for a proposed 50:50 joint venture to manufacture passenger car radial (PCR) tyres in India. The partnership could strengthen BKT's expansion beyond its traditional off-highway tyre business while supporting Pirelli's local manufacturing ambitions.

The companies signed a framework agreement, an offtake agreement and a technical services agreement on October 22, 2026. The arrangement includes immediate manufacturing cooperation at BKT's existing Bhuj facility in Gujarat, followed by plans for a separate joint manufacturing plant.

The definitive JV agreement has not yet been signed. The companies have targeted incorporation by December 31, 2030, subject to specified conditions.

Manufacturing to Begin Under an Offtake Arrangement

Before the proposed joint venture becomes operational, BKT will manufacture Pirelli-branded passenger car tyres at its Bhuj facility.

These tyres will be manufactured according to Pirelli's technical specifications and supplied to Pirelli and its affiliates for domestic and international markets.

The agreement includes minimum annual purchase commitments from Pirelli, matched by BKT's manufacturing capacity commitments.

BKT will also retain the right to develop, manufacture and market passenger car tyres under its own brand, allowing both brands to maintain separate market identities.

The interim offtake agreement will end when the new JV can fulfil Pirelli's requirements. Otherwise, it is scheduled to remain effective until December 31, 2031, with provisions for extension.

Pirelli to Support BKT With Technical Expertise

An important component of the partnership is access to Pirelli's tyre testing and development infrastructure.

Pirelli will provide technical services for BKT-branded products across three segments:

  • Passenger car tyres

  • SUV tyres

  • Two-wheeler tyres

The services will include access to overseas testing facilities, proving grounds and simulation equipment. This technical collaboration could help BKT accelerate product development and validation as it expands into consumer tyre categories.

Why This Partnership Matters for BKT

BKT has traditionally been associated with specialised off-highway tyres serving agricultural, industrial, mining and construction applications.

However, the company is now diversifying into India's much larger on-road tyre market.

Its previously announced expansion strategy includes passenger car radial tyres, commercial vehicle radial tyres and two-wheeler tyres, with the domestic replacement market as an initial priority.

BKT's earlier investor disclosures outlined a phased passenger car tyre entry during FY2026–27, supported by investments in manufacturing capacity and distribution.

The Pirelli arrangement adds an international technology partner to this expansion strategy.

What Pirelli Gains From the Partnership

For Pirelli, the arrangement offers an opportunity to develop a stronger manufacturing footprint in India without initially depending entirely on a new standalone production facility.

Potential advantages include local production, access to BKT's manufacturing infrastructure and the ability to serve Indian and overseas markets.

In particular, local manufacturing could help Pirelli improve supply flexibility and support a broader presence in India's passenger car tyre market.

However, future production capacity, investment amounts and the exact product portfolio for the proposed JV have not yet been disclosed.

Auto Punditz Take

The BKT–Pirelli partnership represents a potentially significant development in India's tyre industry.

For BKT, the collaboration offers a pathway to combine its manufacturing capabilities with Pirelli's technical expertise as it enters the competitive passenger car tyre segment.

For Pirelli, the proposed arrangement creates an opportunity to expand local manufacturing while continuing to operate under its own brand.

The partnership also arrives as global tyre manufacturers increase their attention on India. Michelin, for instance, began local production of its Primacy 5 passenger car tyre in August 2026.

The key factor to watch will be execution: how quickly the partners scale production at Bhuj, develop their respective product portfolios and finalise the proposed joint venture.

Importantly, the announcement is a planned partnership rather than a completed joint venture, and there is no confirmed date yet for the proposed new factory to commence operations.
