BYD India has teased the arrival of its DM-i Super Plug-in Hybrid EV technology, signalling a major shift in the brand’s India strategy. Until now, BYD’s Indian portfolio has been focused only on pure electric vehicles such as the Atto 3, eMAX 7, Seal and Sealion 7. With DM-i, BYD is preparing to enter the plug-in hybrid space as well.
This could be a smart move for India. While EV adoption is growing, many buyers still worry about public charging access, highway range and long-distance usability. BYD’s DM-i technology aims to solve this by offering an EV-first driving experience with the backup of a petrol engine.
What Is BYD DM-i Technology?
BYD describes DM-i as a plug-in hybrid system that prioritizes electric driving. In most city-driving situations, the electric motor is the main source of propulsion. The petrol engine works mainly as a generator and comes into direct drive only in certain conditions where it is more efficient.
This makes DM-i different from conventional strong hybrids. Instead of the petrol engine doing most of the work, the system is tuned to deliver a smoother EV-like drive, lower fuel consumption and much longer combined driving range.
BYD Atto 2 DM-i: The Most Relevant Product For India?
The BYD Atto 2 DM-i could be the most important model for India if BYD wants to make plug-in hybrid technology more accessible. Globally, it is positioned as a compact SUV and sits below larger BYD SUVs. Its size and urban-friendly packaging make it a strong candidate for Indian premium SUV buyers.
The entry Active version uses the smaller 7.8 kWh battery and produces 166 PS. The higher Boost version uses the larger 18 kWh battery and produces 212 PS with 300 Nm of torque.

Dimensions & Practicality
The Atto 2 DM-i is compact enough for city use but still offers practical SUV packaging.
Expected key dimensions are:
Parameter | BYD Atto 2 DM-i |
Length | Around 4,330 mm |
Width | Around 1,830 mm |
Height | Around 1,675 mm |
Wheelbase | Around 2,620 mm |
Boot Space | Around 435 litres |
Expanded Boot Space | Around 1,335 litres |
For India, this puts the Atto 2 DM-i in an interesting zone. It is larger than most sub-4 metre SUVs but more compact than full-size premium SUVs. That could make it attractive for buyers looking at premium compact SUVs, strong hybrids and entry-level EVs.
Features Expected On The Atto 2 DM-i
The Atto 2 DM-i is expected to carry BYD’s familiar premium cabin theme. Internationally, it gets a rotating touchscreen, connected features, advanced driver assistance systems, a digital driver display and practical storage solutions.
Expected feature highlights include:
Feature Area | Expected Equipment |
Infotainment | Rotating touchscreen |
Connectivity | Wireless Apple CarPlay / Android Auto |
Safety | ADAS features, multiple airbags |
Comfort | Vegan leather upholstery, powered front seats |
Convenience | 360-degree camera, ambient lighting |
Design | Full-width LED tail-lamps, aerodynamic alloy wheels |
Final India equipment will depend on the variant BYD chooses to launch.
BYD Sealion 6 DM-i: The Premium SUV Option
While the Atto 2 DM-i could target volumes, the BYD Sealion 6 DM-i could be the more premium option. BYD’s global Sealion 6 DM-i page highlights an 18.3 kWh battery, up to 1,080 km combined range, 6.4 L/100 km fuel consumption and a 5.9-second 0–100 km/h time for the AWD version.
The Sealion 6 is a larger SUV and would likely sit much higher than the Atto 2 DM-i in India. It could target buyers looking for a premium family SUV with long-distance comfort, strong performance and EV-like city driving.
Expected positioning could be around the ₹40 lakh–₹50 lakh range, depending on import strategy and final India specification.

BYD’s DM-i strategy could open a new chapter in India’s electrified vehicle market. The company has already built credibility in EVs, but plug-in hybrids could help it reach buyers who are not yet ready to go fully electric.
The Atto 2 DM-i is the more interesting product for India because BYD Media’s official data shows a strong combination of up to 89 km EV-only range, nearly 1,000 km total range and compact SUV practicality. If BYD can price it aggressively, it could become a serious alternative to strong hybrids, premium compact SUVs and entry-level EVs.
