BYD is preparing to take a major step upmarket in India, with its luxury sub-brand Denza expected to enter the country with the D9 executive MPV. The India launch is reportedly being targeted around Diwali 2026, positioning the electric MPV between the MG M9 and Toyota Vellfire.
India's rapidly expanding premium electric vehicle market could soon welcome another major global brand. BYD is understood to be in the final stages of introducing Denza, its luxury vehicle brand, in India, with the flagship Denza D9 expected to spearhead the rollout.
According to reports, BYD is targeting a Diwali 2026 launch for the D9. However, the timeline isn't officially confirmed yet, and the launch could move to the Bharat Mobility Global Expo in February 2027 if there are delays.
The development is significant because Denza would take BYD considerably further upmarket than its existing Indian portfolio, putting the Chinese EV giant directly into India's luxury and chauffeur-driven executive vehicle space.

Denza D9 India Launch: What We Know
The Denza D9 is expected to become the first Denza product sold in India.
While Denza offers the D9 internationally with both battery-electric and plug-in hybrid powertrains, the fully electric version is expected to receive priority for India. That strategy makes considerable sense from a pricing perspective. Battery electric vehicles currently attract 5% GST in India, while a large luxury plug-in hybrid would face a considerably heavier taxation structure.
The D9 is also expected to initially arrive as a Completely Built Unit (CBU), allowing BYD to test demand in India's relatively small but growing ultra-premium EV segment before committing to a broader localisation strategy.
Expected Price: Around Rs 90 Lakh
Pricing will arguably be the most interesting aspect of Denza's India strategy. Reports suggest that BYD could position the Denza D9 at approximately Rs 90 lakh, ex-showroom, although final pricing has not been announced.
This would put it in an interesting position in India's premium MPV hierarchy. The MG M9 currently occupies the luxury electric MPV space at around Rs 80 lakh, while the Toyota Vellfire sits significantly higher at over Rs 1.20 crore. The Lexus LM occupies an even more exclusive segment above Rs 2 crore.
The Denza D9 could therefore attempt to occupy the sizeable price gap between the M9 and Vellfire. More importantly, BYD could use equipment levels, electric range and rear-seat luxury to position the D9 as a technology-focused alternative to established Japanese luxury MPVs.
Denza D9 Is Bigger Than the Toyota Vellfire
The D9 has imposing proportions befitting its flagship MPV positioning.
Dimension | Denza D9 |
Length | 5,250 mm |
Width | 1,960 mm |
Height | 1,920 mm |
Wheelbase | 3,110 mm |
At 5.25 metres long, the D9 has considerable road presence and is physically larger than the Toyota Vellfire. The large 3,110mm wheelbase also allows Denza to create a cabin primarily focused around second-row passenger comfort.
Luxury Cabin Is the D9's Biggest Attraction
Unlike conventional seven-seat family MPVs, the D9 has been developed primarily as a luxury executive people mover. Its three-row cabin features individual second-row captain seats and a long list of comfort and convenience equipment depending on the market and specification.
International versions offer features such as electrically adjustable luxury captain seats, massage functions, extensive infotainment displays, panoramic glass areas and powered sliding rear doors.
Denza also offers its intelligent cockpit architecture with voice assistance and 5G connectivity in overseas markets. For India, the second row is likely to become one of the D9's biggest selling points, particularly among chauffeur-driven luxury car buyers.
103.36kWh Blade Battery
The existing international-specification D9 EV is available with BYD's 103.36kWh Blade LFP battery. One overseas configuration uses a front-mounted electric motor producing approximately 230kW (313PS) and 360Nm.
The front-wheel-drive version can accelerate from 0-100km/h in around 9.5 seconds.
A more powerful AWD version is also offered internationally, combining front and rear electric motors for approximately 374PS and 470Nm, reducing the 0-100km/h time to around 6.9 seconds. Which configuration BYD chooses for India remains unconfirmed.
Up To 600km Claimed Range
Depending on the market and testing cycle, Denza quotes the D9 with an electric driving range of up to 600km on the NEDC cycle.
The more stringent WLTP-rated versions sold in some international markets offer approximately:
520km – FWD
480km – AWD
Both figures are based on the 103.36kWh battery.
The D9 also supports high-voltage fast charging. Denza claims that around 150km of additional driving range can be added in approximately 10 minutes under suitable charging conditions. However, specifications for the eventual India-spec D9 could differ from the versions currently available overseas.
Blade Battery And Advanced Safety Technology
The D9 uses BYD's well-known Blade Battery technology, based on lithium iron phosphate chemistry. International versions also offer an extensive suite of active and passive safety systems
.
Depending on specification, equipment includes autonomous emergency braking, multiple airbags and advanced driver assistance technologies. The D9 also features Denza's DiSus-C intelligent damping body control system, designed to improve ride comfort and body control — particularly important for a large luxury MPV focused heavily on rear-seat passengers.
Dedicated Denza Dealerships Could Come To India
Another interesting aspect of BYD's strategy could be the retail experience. Rather than simply putting the D9 alongside BYD models such as the Atto 3, Seal, eMax 7 and Sealion 7, reports indicate that the company could establish dedicated Denza outlets in India.
That would help establish Denza as a separate luxury marque rather than merely a premium BYD model line. Such differentiation could prove important when asking customers to spend around Rs 90 lakh on a vehicle from a relatively new luxury brand in India.
What Exactly Is Denza?
Denza has an interesting history. The brand was established in 2010 as a joint venture between BYD and Daimler, the parent company of Mercedes-Benz at the time. Over the years, BYD progressively increased its stake in the company before eventually assuming full ownership of Denza in 2024.
Denza has since become an important part of BYD's strategy to move beyond mainstream electric vehicles and compete in higher-margin premium segments.
The D9 has emerged as one of the brand's most important models and has already expanded into multiple international markets.
Why Denza's India Entry Matters
BYD's current Indian portfolio primarily operates between the mainstream-premium and luxury-entry segments.
Denza changes that equation.
An approximately Rs 90 lakh D9 would effectively give BYD Group a product capable of competing for customers shopping significantly above its existing vehicles.
It also arrives as India's premium MPV segment begins to expand.
For years, the Toyota Vellfire largely defined the chauffeur-driven luxury MPV market. The arrival of the all-electric MG M9 has already introduced an alternative, and the Denza D9 could intensify competition further.
The combination of a large Blade battery, long electric range, luxury second-row seating and aggressive positioning could make the D9 particularly attractive to corporate buyers, luxury hotels and affluent customers looking beyond conventional German luxury sedans and SUVs.
Auto Punditz Take
The Denza D9 could represent something bigger than another premium EV launch for BYD. It could be BYD's first serious attempt to establish a standalone luxury automotive brand in India.
Pricing will ultimately determine how disruptive the D9 can be. At around Rs 90 lakh, it would sit above the MG M9 while substantially undercutting the Toyota Vellfire and Lexus LM. That gives Denza an interesting opportunity.
But competing at this price point requires much more than battery capacity and equipment. Indian luxury buyers expect exceptional dealership environments, personalised customer service and dependable after-sales support. The possibility of dedicated Denza dealerships therefore could be almost as important as the D9 itself.
If BYD manages the positioning correctly, the Denza D9 could become one of the most interesting luxury EV launches of 2026 — and potentially open the door for a much wider Denza portfolio in India.
