3 min read

India’s electric passenger vehicle market recorded a sharp expansion in August 2026, with combined electric car dispatches reaching 36,593 units, compared with 19,792 units in August 2025. This translates into a strong 84.9% year-on-year growth, underlining the rapid broadening of the country’s electric car market.

Tata Motors continued to dominate the segment with more than 16,000 units, while Mahindra strengthened its position in second place. VinFast emerged as one of the biggest movers during the month, while Maruti Suzuki and Toyota also added meaningful volumes to an EV market that is becoming increasingly competitive.

Auto Punditz Take

August 2026 marks another major step in the expansion of India’s electric passenger vehicle market. Total volumes increasing by nearly 85% YoY to 36,593 units is significant, but the changing competitive structure is equally important.

Tata remains the clear market leader, but Mahindra is growing at a faster rate and has already secured more than one-fifth of the segment. VinFast’s rise to fourth position and Maruti Suzuki’s entry into the top five indicate that the next phase of India’s EV growth could involve a much wider group of manufacturers.

MG’s decline also demonstrates that overall market expansion does not automatically translate into growth for every brand.

With Tata, Mahindra, MG and VinFast controlling close to 89% of the market today, the key question for the coming months will be whether newer entrants such as Maruti Suzuki, Toyota and other upcoming EV manufacturers can progressively reduce this concentration.
