Chery T1TP SUV Patented In India: Modular SUV That Can Transform Into A Pickup Truck

Chinese automaker Chery continues to strengthen its intellectual property portfolio in India, with the latest design patent revealing one of its most unconventional concepts yet. The company has patented the SUV version of its modular T1TP concept—a vehicle capable of transforming from a family SUV into a lifestyle pickup truck through interchangeable body panels.

While a patent filing does not necessarily confirm a commercial launch, it highlights Chery's long-term ambitions for the Indian market and showcases the company's focus on modular vehicle architecture.

Chery's patented T1TP showcases a modular design capable of transforming from an SUV into a lifestyle pickup truck.

A Different Take On Vehicle Versatility

Unlike conventional SUVs or pickups, the Chery T1TP has been designed around a modular philosophy. The same base vehicle can be configured into multiple body styles, including:

  • Seven-seat SUV

  • Double-cab pickup truck

  • Camper vehicle

The transformation is achieved by replacing rear body sections rather than changing the core platform, allowing owners to tailor the vehicle according to their lifestyle requirements. Chery claims the concept can cater to almost 99 percent of family mobility scenarios, making it one of the most flexible vehicle concepts showcased by the brand.

SUV Patent Reveals Production Intent

Earlier patent filings showcased the pickup version of the T1TP. The latest Indian patent now depicts the fully enclosed SUV derivative, suggesting that Chery is protecting multiple body styles of the same modular platform.

The SUV features:

  • Boxy, upright proportions

  • Prominent wheel arches

  • Short front overhang

  • Flush body surfaces

  • High ground clearance

  • Integrated rear cabin replacing the pickup bed

Despite the enclosed rear section, the overall silhouette retains the rugged proportions expected from an adventure-focused SUV.

Chery Super Hybrid Powertrain Expected

Although Chery has not officially disclosed complete specifications for the T1TP, the company has confirmed that the modular SUV will be powered by its Chery Super Hybrid (CSH) plug-in hybrid technology.

International reports indicate the SUV could use a powertrain similar to the Tiggo 8 CSH, featuring:

  • 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine

  • Plug-in hybrid electric system

  • Combined output of around 352 hp

  • Peak torque of approximately 515 Nm

Such a setup would position the T1TP among the most powerful electrified SUVs in its segment if launched in production form.

Why Is Chery Filing So Many Patents In India?

The T1TP is only one of several Chery products that have received Indian design protection in recent months. Other filings include models such as the Tiggo 8, Tiggo 7L, Jetour T2, QQ3 EV and several products from Chery's expanding global portfolio.

These patents suggest that Chery is laying the groundwork for a wider India strategy rather than protecting a single product.

Industry reports also indicate that Chery is preparing to enter India through a partnership with JSW Motors, although the company has not officially announced a complete launch roadmap.

Would Such A Vehicle Work In India?

The Indian passenger vehicle market has seen tremendous growth in SUVs over the past decade, but the pickup segment remains relatively underdeveloped.

Lifestyle pickup buyers currently have limited choices, with most offerings targeting commercial applications. A modular SUV that could double as a pickup may appeal to:

  • Adventure enthusiasts

  • Outdoor travellers

  • Caravan users

  • Camping enthusiasts

  • Small business owners

  • Buyers seeking both family transport and cargo capability

If priced competitively, such a concept could create an entirely new niche between premium SUVs and lifestyle pickups.

Global Trend Towards Modular Vehicles

The T1TP also reflects a broader global movement towards flexible vehicle platforms.

Instead of designing separate vehicles for every purpose, manufacturers are increasingly developing architectures that can support multiple body styles while sharing common mechanical components.

This approach helps manufacturers:

  • Reduce development costs

  • Improve manufacturing efficiency

  • Increase production flexibility

  • Cater to niche customer requirements

  • Accelerate new product introductions

For customers, it offers greater practicality without requiring ownership of multiple vehicles.

Patent Filing Does Not Confirm Launch

While the patent has generated considerable interest, it is important to note that a design registration does not guarantee an India launch.

Automakers routinely patent products to:

  • Protect design rights

  • Prevent copying

  • Preserve future business opportunities

  • Prepare for potential market entry

Several patented vehicles never reach Indian showrooms, making it premature to assume the T1TP will be launched here.

Auto Punditz Verdict

The Chery T1TP is one of the most innovative concepts currently under development by a mainstream automaker. Its ability to transition between an SUV, pickup and camper highlights how vehicle design is evolving beyond traditional body styles.

For India, where SUVs continue to dominate buyer preferences, a modular vehicle like

the T1TP could carve out a unique position if launched with competitive pricing and local manufacturing. While the patent alone does not confirm Chery's plans, it certainly reinforces the company's intent to build a meaningful product portfolio ahead of its anticipated entry into the Indian market.

If brought to production in a form close to the concept, the Chery T1TP could become one of the most versatile family vehicles available—not just in India, but globally.
