India Auto Sales Hit Record August High in 2026: PVs Surge 36.5%, Two-Wheelers Cross 20 Lakh
India’s automobile industry recorded its highest-ever sales for the month of August across passenger vehicles, two-wheelers and three-wheelers in August 2026, according to the latest data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM).
Passenger vehicle sales rose 36.5% year-on-year to 4,39,309 units, while two-wheeler volumes crossed the 20-lakh mark. Three-wheelers also registered strong double-digit growth.
While the headline numbers indicate robust industry momentum, the exceptionally high year-on-year growth also needs some context: SIAM says August 2026 benefited from a relatively lower comparison base in August 2025.

India Auto Sales – August 2026
Segment | August 2026 | August 2025 | YoY Growth |
Passenger Vehicles | 4,39,309 | 3,21,901 | +36.5% |
Two-Wheelers | 20,34,698 | 18,41,954 | +10.5% |
Three-Wheelers | 93,764 | 76,324 | +22.8% |
All three categories recorded their highest-ever August volumes, according to SIAM.
Passenger Vehicle Sales Jump 36.5%
Passenger vehicles delivered the strongest headline growth.
Domestic PV sales increased from 3,21,901 units in August 2025 to 4,39,309 units in August 2026, an increase of 1,17,408 units.
That translates into 36.5% year-on-year growth and makes August 2026 the strongest August recorded by India's passenger vehicle industry.
However, these are manufacturer-to-dealer domestic dispatches, rather than vehicle registrations or retail deliveries to customers. That distinction is particularly relevant during the run-up to the festive season, when manufacturers and dealers can build inventory in anticipation of stronger retail demand.
SIAM's PV total includes Tata Motors domestic sales, while monthly data from BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar Land Rover and Volvo Auto is unavailable.
Utility Vehicles Continue to Drive PV Growth
The underlying PV numbers reinforce the importance of SUVs and other utility vehicles to India's car market.
Utility vehicle domestic sales reached approximately 2.50 lakh units in August, rising 39.2% YoY. Over April-August 2026, UV sales reached 13,62,527 units, up 30.7% and accounting for more than two-thirds of domestic PV volumes during the period.
This indicates that India's record PV market isn't simply expanding uniformly across body styles. Utility vehicles remain central to the industry's growth.
Two-Wheelers Cross 20 Lakh Units
India's two-wheeler industry also recorded its best-ever August.
Domestic volumes increased 10.5% YoY, from 18,41,954 units in August 2025 to 20,34,698 units in August 2026.
But the more interesting story lies within the segment.
Scooters: 8,55,715 units, +23.8% YoY
Motorcycles: 11,33,047 units, +2.4% YoY
Mopeds: 45,936 units, +4.7% YoY
Scooters therefore substantially outpaced motorcycles during August, even though motorcycles continued to account for the larger absolute volume.
That divergence is worth watching over the coming months, particularly as electric scooters contribute to the broader transformation of India's urban two-wheeler market.
Three-Wheelers Rise Nearly 23%
Three-wheeler sales increased from 76,324 units in August 2025 to 93,764 units in August 2026, representing 22.8% YoY growth.
Passenger carriers remained the dominant sub-segment:
Passenger carriers: 78,680 units, +22.4%
Goods carriers: 13,320 units, +34.9%
Interestingly, some smaller electric categories moved in the opposite direction. E-rickshaw sales declined 6% to 1,264 units, while e-cart volumes fell 38.3% to 500 units.
Domestic PV Boom Contrasts With Falling Exports
One of the most interesting aspects of August is the divergence between domestic passenger vehicle demand and exports.
While domestic PV dispatches jumped 36.5%, passenger vehicle exports declined 17% YoY to 68,230 units, compared with 82,246 units a year earlier.
The decline wasn't uniform across vehicle categories.
Passenger-car exports dropped sharply by 51.5% to 21,181 units, whereas utility-vehicle exports increased 23.7% to 46,400 units.
The export figures also carry an important data caveat: SIAM's monthly export numbers do not include Tata Motors, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar Land Rover and Volvo.
Even with that limitation, the contrast between traditional passenger cars and utility vehicles provides another indication of the growing importance of UVs to India's automotive manufacturing base.
Total Vehicle Production Crosses 31.5 Lakh
Indian manufacturers produced 31,57,822 vehicles across passenger vehicles, three-wheelers, two-wheelers and quadricycles during August 2026.
The scale of production alongside record domestic dispatches points to manufacturers preparing for the important festive-demand period.
Auto Punditz Take
August 2026 produced a rare milestone for India's automobile industry: passenger vehicles, two-wheelers and three-wheelers all recorded their highest-ever August volumes simultaneously.
But the numbers reveal more than the headline record.
Passenger vehicles posted the fastest growth at 36.5%, utility vehicles continued to dominate PV demand, scooters substantially outpaced motorcycle growth, and three-wheelers expanded by nearly 23%.
At the same time, passenger vehicle exports declined 17%, creating a notable contrast between domestic and overseas performance.
The next test will be whether the momentum continues once the favourable base effect starts fading. If festive retail demand remains strong even against tougher comparisons, that would provide a clearer indication of how much of the current expansion is structural rather than statistical.
Key numbers:
PV 4.39 lakh (+36.5%)
2W 20.35 lakh (+10.5%)
3W 0.94 lakh (+22.8%)
PV exports 68,230 (-17%).
