Around 3,03,399 passenger cars were sold in the Indian market for January 2021. The sales increased by 17.7% in Jan’21 v/s Jan’20.
It is encouraging to see the Indian Passenger Vehicle industry recording growth SIX months in succession. After a 19.6% YoY growth in Aug (source), 31.14% growth in Sep’20 (source), 17.5% growth in Oct’20 (source), 8.8% growth in Nov’20 (source) and 18% growth in Dec’20 (source) – the industry has registered almost 16% YoY growth in Jan’21. Do note that the growth is also against a low base in last year due to BS6 transition. However; a lot of fast selling models are now commanding a waiting period of 2-9 months which is a very positive sign for the industry. Also note that the Industry crossed 3 Lakh units dispatches after 3 months. The Industry recorded >3 Lakh units Wholesale volumes only once (Oct’20) in the entire Calendar Year 2020!
OEM-wise Sales Snapshot for January 2021 –
Maruti Suzuki recorded a mammoth drop in Market Share and lost -7.5% MS in Jan’21 v/s Jan’20. Maruti’s volumes were flat and could register a Market Share of 45.8%.
Tata Motors continues its dream run and grew a phenomenal 94% YoY and the growth was one of the highest in the Industry! Tata Motors also recorded the highest Market Share growth in Dec’20 (it jumped from 5.3% in Jan’20 to 8.9% in Jan’21).
Kia Motors India volumes saw a 23.3% YoY increase. But; it had to content with FIFTH position in the table. M&M retained its fourth spot and was a just 1,442k units ahead of Kia.
Hyundai grew a moderate 24% YoY and held to its Market Share by 1.1% v/s Last Year.
Nissan overtook MG and placed itself in the 10th rank on the table. Nissan registered the highest YoY growth of 184% and crossed 4k volumes for the first time in the past 34 months. It was only in March 2018 when Nissan saw a Wholesale volume of 4,921 units.
Even with a YoY increase of 15.1%; MG Motors couldn’t improve its Market Share and lost its Tenth spot to Nissan. It’ll be a tough road ahead with competition intensifying from Harrier+Safari.
