JLR's 2027 EV Roadmap: Range Rover Electric, Jaguar Type 01 and New Defender EV Lead Electrification Push

5 min read

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), the Tata Motors-owned British luxury automaker, is preparing for a major expansion of its electric vehicle portfolio through 2027. Its product strategy includes the Range Rover Electric, Range Rover Sport Electric, Jaguar's new Type 01 luxury GT and subsequent electric models from Range Rover and Defender.

However, JLR's latest strategy marks an important shift. Rather than committing every new model exclusively to battery-electric technology, the company is expanding its hybrid options to address different levels of EV demand worldwide.

According to JLR's June 2026 investor strategy update, Jaguar will become an exclusively electric brand, while Range Rover, Defender and Discovery will retain multiple powertrain options.

JLR EV Roadmap: Key Highlights

  • Range Rover Electric: Scheduled for launch in late 2026, introducing battery-electric propulsion to the flagship luxury SUV.

  • Range Rover Sport Electric: Also targeted for 2026, expanding the electric luxury-performance SUV portfolio.

  • Jaguar Type 01: New four-door electric grand tourer, with its production-model reveal scheduled for 2026.

  • New Range Rover EMA model: First vehicle on JLR's Electrified Modular Architecture, expected to be revealed in 2026.

  • New Defender-family model: Confirmed as the second EMA-based model, with EV and future hybrid options.

  • Investment: £18 billion committed over five financial years through FY2028–29 for technology, platforms and transformation.

Jaguar Type 01: The Big EV Launch of 2027

Jaguar has already unveiled its production Type 01 on 7 October 2026, marking the beginning of its new all-electric era.

The four-door luxury GT will enter production in 2027 at Solihull, UK, with customer orders opening in early 2027.

The Type 01 will feature an 850V architecture, support up to 350kW DC charging and carry a starting price of £130,000 in the UK. These performance and range figures remain manufacturer estimates pending homologation.

Range Rover Sport Electric and New EMA SUVs

JLR's next electrification phase also includes the Range Rover Sport Electric and a new generation of vehicles using the Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA).

The new EMA platform will underpin a Range Rover-family model first, followed by a Defender-family model. Both BEV and future full-hybrid powertrain configurations are planned.

The company is preparing its Halewood manufacturing plant for these vehicles, providing flexibility to build electric and combustion-powered models according to customer demand.

Importantly, reports suggest that a fully electric version of the existing, larger Defender has been pushed into the early 2030s. This should not be confused with the separate new Defender-family EMA product, whose launch date remains unconfirmed.

JLR Is Moving Toward a Flexible EV Strategy

JLR's updated strategy reflects changing global market conditions. EV adoption has been slower than anticipated in some premium automotive markets, prompting manufacturers to maintain alternative powertrain options.

Jaguar will adopt a uniquely battery-electric identity, while the other three brands will offer a broader mix of electric and hybrid vehicles.

This approach allows JLR to pursue electrification without abandoning buyers who still prefer conventional or hybrid luxury SUVs.

What Does JLR's EV Roadmap Mean for India?

For India, JLR's expansion into battery-electric luxury vehicles could strengthen its position against established premium EV competitors, particularly in the high-end SUV category.

The Range Rover Electric is likely to be especially relevant to Indian luxury buyers, while Jaguar's Type 01 could help reposition the brand in the premium electric grand tourer segment.

However, India-specific launch dates, prices and allocations for these upcoming models have not all been confirmed. Global announcements should therefore not be presented as confirmed Indian launches.

JLR India Dealership Expansion: 40 Outlets Targeted by End-2026

Alongside its ambitious electric vehicle roadmap, Jaguar Land Rover is accelerating its dealership expansion across India, aiming to strengthen its retail presence before the arrival of its next generation of luxury electric vehicles.

JLR India plans to expand its retail network to 40 outlets by the end of 2026, up from a reported 32 outlets at the time of the company's expansion announcement.

Expansion follows strong sales growth

JLR India Managing Director Rajan Amba highlighted that the company's annual sales had grown from approximately 2,500 vehicles to 6,500 vehicles in three years despite little dealership expansion.

The automaker is now working to narrow its retail footprint gap with competing luxury manufacturers, some of which operate around 50–60 outlets nationwide. Recent developments include a new JLR dealership in Gurugram, a larger integrated retail facility on Delhi's Mathura Road, and a relocated Navnit Motors outlet in Mumbai's Bandra Kurla Complex.

Why dealership expansion matters for JLR's EV ambitions

A larger dealership footprint will be important as JLR introduces the Range Rover Electric, Range Rover Sport Electric and Jaguar's new electric portfolio. Beyond vehicle sales, electrification will require retailers to build expertise in high-voltage vehicle servicing, customer education, charging solutions and battery-related after-sales support.

These are important operational priorities for future EV adoption, although JLR has not publicly detailed a dealership-by-dealership EV infrastructure rollout in the reports reviewed.

The network expansion also supports JLR India's broader growth ambitions. In June 2026, Rajan Amba indicated that the company was targeting approximately 20–25% sales growth in FY2026–27, supported by new products, order demand and retail expansion.

JLR's electrification roadmap includes the Range Rover Electric, Jaguar Type 01 and next-generation electric SUVs, alongside plans to expand its India retail network to 40 outlets by the end of 2026.

Auto Punditz Take

JLR's strategy for 2027 rests on three important pillars: new electric products, powertrain flexibility and a stronger retail network.

While Jaguar's Type 01 and the Range Rover Electric will strengthen the company's electrification credentials, its dealership expansion in India could be equally important to long-term growth.

The planned increase to 40 outlets by the end of 2026 reflects management's confidence in India's premium automotive market. However, the success of JLR's EV transition will depend not only on new launches but also on charging accessibility, specialist after-sales support and customer confidence.

For India, JLR is preparing for its next phase of growth by expanding its physical retail presence while developing a more electrified global product portfolio.
