New BMW 3 Series Debuts with 443hp M350 and 912km-Range Electric i3
BMW has unveiled the eighth-generation 3 Series, bringing the nameplate into a new era with a substantially redesigned petrol line-up and, for the first time, a fully electric BMW i3 developed on the Neue Klasse architecture.
The new family spans conventional petrol engines with 48V mild-hybrid assistance and two electric i3 variants at launch. At the top of the combustion-engine range sits the new BMW M350 xDrive, while the electric line-up is headed by the i3 50 xDrive, which offers a claimed range of up to 912km on the WLTP cycle.
New BMW 3 Series enters the Neue Klasse era
BMW says the new 3 Series adopts a common design language across both combustion-engine and electric versions.
The styling is noticeably cleaner than before, with a fresh interpretation of BMW’s kidney grille and twin-headlight signature. The front lighting elements and grille are visually integrated, while the body retains classic 3 Series proportions with a long wheelbase, short overhangs and a set-back glasshouse.
Flush-fitting door handles, pronounced wheel arches and a strongly horizontal rear-light treatment further distinguish the new generation.
Electric i3 versions will be available with 19- to 21-inch wheels, while combustion-engine models will use wheels ranging from 18 to 20 inches.

BMW M350 xDrive replaces the M340i
The biggest performance-car development is the arrival of the BMW M350 xDrive, which replaces the M340i as the flagship combustion-engined 3 Series.
It uses a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six petrol engine combined with a 48V mild-hybrid system. BMW quotes a maximum output of 326kW, or 443hp, with the US-market figure listed as 437 hp due to the different measurement convention.
The M350 xDrive can accelerate from 0–100km/h in 4.1 seconds, while top speed is electronically limited to 250km/h.
BMW has also introduced a new Drift Moment function. When activated through the central display, the system can send power to the rear wheels only, giving the M350 a more rear-driven character in appropriate conditions.
Adaptive M suspension is standard on the M350 xDrive.
BMW i3 arrives as the first fully electric 3 Series
The more significant technological shift is the arrival of the new BMW i3, the first fully electric 3 Series built on the Neue Klasse platform.
BMW will initially offer two versions:

Both use a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup, with one electric motor on each axle.
The i3 50 xDrive produces 469hp and 645Nm and can accelerate from 0–100km/h in 4.7 seconds.
Up to 912km WLTP range
The headline figure is the i3 50 xDrive’s claimed 912km maximum WLTP range.
That comes from a large 108.7kWh battery and BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology, which uses new cylindrical battery cells, an 800V electrical architecture and more efficient electric motors.
BMW quotes energy consumption as low as 13.4kWh/100km for the most efficient configuration of the i3 50 xDrive.
As always, the maximum WLTP figure will depend on wheel size, specification, temperature, driving conditions and usage.
400kW fast charging
The new i3 also introduces substantially faster charging capability.
The 800V system supports DC charging at up to 400kW. BMW claims the i3 50 xDrive can add enough energy for up to 423km of WLTP range in 10 minutes, provided a sufficiently powerful charging station and suitable battery conditions are available.
The Gen6 electric architecture also supports bidirectional charging, expanding the potential use of the vehicle battery beyond simply powering the car.
i3 M60 xDrive coming in 2027
BMW has already confirmed that a more powerful i3 M60 xDrive will join the electric 3 Series family in 2027.
Final performance figures have not yet been released, but it will sit at the top of the electric i3 range as an M Performance model.
This effectively gives BMW two parallel performance paths within the 3 Series family:
M350 xDrive for combustion-engine buyers and i3 M60 xDrive for electric-performance customers.
Petrol and plug-in hybrid models continue
BMW is not moving the 3 Series entirely to electric propulsion.
Alongside the M350, the new range will include four-cylinder petrol variants equipped with the latest BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and 48V mild-hybrid assistance.
BMW has also confirmed that a plug-in hybrid 3 Series will be added during the coming year, reinforcing the company’s multi-powertrain strategy.
New Panoramic iDrive cabin
The interior represents another major departure from the outgoing 3 Series.

The Panoramic Vision system projects information across the lower section of the windscreen, moving key information closer to the driver’s natural line of sight.
BMW Operating System X is based on the Android Open Source Project and supports over-the-air software updates and an expanded range of digital services. Amazon Alexa+ AI integration will also be introduced in supported markets.
Level 2 driver assistance
The new 3 Series also gets an expanded suite of driver-assistance technology.
BMW says SAE Level 2 systems have been substantially upgraded. Its Motorway Assistant supports attentive hands-free driving at speeds of up to 130km/h in selected markets, while navigation-guided partially automated urban-driving functionality is planned from 2027.
Market availability will vary.
ICE and EV models built at different German plants
BMW will build the electric i3 at its historic Munich plant, where the original 3 Series first entered production in 1975.
The combustion-engined 3 Series, meanwhile, will be manufactured at Dingolfing. BMW says Munich will transition entirely to production of fully electric Neue Klasse vehicles from 2027.
What about India?
BMW has not yet announced an Indian launch timeline for the new 3 Series family.
The company has, however, already confirmed that the iX3 long-wheelbase will come to India in 2027, establishing Neue Klasse technology in the Indian market. An India
launch for the i3 remains unconfirmed.
Given BMW India’s existing focus on the M340i and long-wheelbase 3 Series, the M350 xDrive would be a logical successor to the M340i, but BMW has not yet confirmed an India-specific variant line-up.
Auto Punditz Take
The new 3 Series is significant because BMW is no longer treating electric and combustion models as completely separate product families.
Instead, the company is creating one 3 Series design and technology ecosystem with multiple propulsion options.
The M350 xDrive’s 443hp output and Drift Moment function keep the enthusiast appeal intact, while the i3 50 xDrive’s 912km WLTP range and 400kW charging capability demonstrate how far BMW’s electric architecture has progressed.
For India, the most relevant questions will be whether BMW brings the M350 as a direct replacement for the M340i and whether the electric i3 joins the confirmed iX3 Neue Klasse SUV in the market.
