Ola S1Z Launched at ₹79,999 With Made-in-India LFP Battery; 5.1 kWh Version Claims 301 Km Range

Ola Electric has launched the new S1Z electric scooter in India with prices starting at ₹79,999, introducing its indigenously developed LFP Bharat Cell technology to a more affordable mass-market electric two-wheeler.


Ola Electric has expanded its electric scooter portfolio with the launch of the Ola S1Z, priced from an introductory ₹79,999 ex-showroom.


The new scooter is available with 3.1 kWh and 5.1 kWh battery options, with the larger battery version claiming an impressive 301 km IDC-certified range.

However, range and pricing are only part of the story.


The S1Z is particularly significant because it uses Ola Electric's own lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells, developed and manufactured in India. This represents another major step in the company's strategy to vertically integrate its electric vehicle supply chain.

Deliveries of the 3.1 kWh S1Z are scheduled to begin in December 2026, while deliveries of the 5.1 kWh version are planned from March 2027.


Ola S1Z Gets In-House LFP Bharat Cells

The biggest technological development on the S1Z is its battery.

Ola says the scooter uses its indigenously designed and manufactured LFP cell technology, produced at the company's Gigafactory in India.


LFP, or lithium iron phosphate, chemistry has some inherent advantages over several nickel-based lithium-ion chemistries commonly used in EVs. These include relatively high thermal stability and potentially longer cycle life.


Ola claims its LFP cells have been engineered specifically for Indian operating conditions and can provide an extended battery lifespan.

The company's increasing localisation of cell manufacturing could also become strategically important from a cost perspective.


Battery cells remain one of the largest contributors to an electric vehicle's manufacturing cost. Local cell production gives Ola greater control over technology, supply availability and potentially battery costs as manufacturing scales up.


Up To 301 Km IDC Range

The entry S1Z uses a 3.1 kWh battery and delivers a claimed: 179 km IDC-certified range


The larger 5.1 kWh version raises the certified figure to: 301 km IDC range


That makes the higher-capacity S1Z particularly noteworthy considering its introductory price of ₹99,999.


Real-world range will naturally vary depending on riding style, speed, terrain, payload, ambient temperature and traffic conditions, so the IDC numbers should not be interpreted as guaranteed everyday riding figures.


Nevertheless, a certified 301 km figure gives Ola a strong headline number in the sub-₹1 lakh electric scooter space.


4 kW Motor and 70 Kmph Top Speed

Both S1Z variants use a 4 kW peak-output mid-drive IPM motor.

The 3.1 kWh model is claimed to accelerate from 0-40 kmph in 4.6 seconds, while the heavier 5.1 kWh version takes 4.9 seconds.

MoveOS 5 and Connected Features

The S1Z runs Ola Electric's MoveOS 5 software platform.

Connected functionality includes features such as:

Ola is also placing considerable emphasis on the longevity of its LFP chemistry, claiming the technology has been developed to offer significantly longer battery life.


As with all battery longevity claims, actual performance over several years will become clearer once significant numbers of Bharat Cell-equipped scooters accumulate real-world mileage.


New Dealer-Operated Retail Strategy

The S1Z also introduces an important change beyond the vehicle itself.

It is set to become one of the first Ola products to be sold through a dealer-operated retail model, representing a significant shift from the company's earlier emphasis on company-controlled distribution.


Expanding through dealers could help Ola increase its reach in Tier-2, Tier-3 and smaller markets without relying solely on a company-owned store network.


For an affordable scooter such as the S1Z, this could prove particularly important

because buyers in this segment typically place considerable emphasis on easy access to sales and after-sales service.


Ola S1Z Is Very Different From the Original S1 Z

Interestingly, Ola had previously announced an S1 Z in November 2024.

That earlier vehicle was positioned considerably lower in the market, with removable batteries and an introductory starting price of ₹59,999.

The 2026 S1Z is effectively a substantially different proposition.


The new scooter gets larger 3.1 kWh and 5.1 kWh LFP battery packs, substantially longer claimed range, MoveOS 5 and Ola's latest internally developed battery technology.

It therefore represents much more than a conventional model-year update.


Ola's Vertical Integration Push Gets Serious

Ola Electric has repeatedly positioned localisation and vertical integration at the centre of its long-term EV strategy.

Developing battery cells internally potentially gives the company greater control over:

  • Pack design

  • Vehicle integration

  • Supply chain

  • Cost

  • Manufacturing

Ola says its Bharat Cell platform has been developed at its battery R&D facilities and is manufactured at its Gigafactory in India.


The company had already begun introducing internally developed cells into other products. Bringing LFP chemistry to the S1Z, however, could be more consequential because of the volumes associated with India's mass-market scooter segment.


Competition Will Be Intense

The S1Z arrives in one of the fastest-evolving parts of India's electric vehicle market.

Ola will compete with products and brands including:

TVS iQube, Bajaj Chetak, Ather Rizta and Vida, along with several emerging electric two-wheeler manufacturers.


The ₹79,999 starting price gives Ola an aggressive entry point.

More interestingly, the ₹99,999 5.1 kWh version with a claimed 301 km IDC range creates an unusually high range-per-rupee proposition.


But purchase decisions in the electric scooter segment increasingly depend on much more than headline range.

Service quality, battery durability, charging reliability, resale value and long-term ownership experience could ultimately prove just as important.


Auto Punditz Take

The Ola S1Z could be one of Ola Electric's most strategically important launches yet.


A ₹79,999 starting price will naturally attract attention, but the real development lies underneath the floorboard: Ola is attempting to turn its battery-cell manufacturing ambitions into a genuine mass-market cost advantage.


The 5.1 kWh version is particularly interesting.

At ₹99,999 with a claimed 301 km IDC range, Ola is offering battery capacity and certified range that would normally be associated with considerably more expensive electric scooters.


If the company can translate that certified range into strong real-world efficiency while maintaining battery reliability and controlling production costs, competitors may eventually have to respond with either larger batteries or sharper pricing.

There is another equally important development—the dealer model.


An affordable scooter can generate demand through aggressive pricing, but converting that demand into sustainable volumes requires a strong physical retail and service footprint. Dealer-operated expansion could therefore prove just as important to S1Z's success as the indigenous battery technology itself.


In that sense, the S1Z isn't simply another electric scooter launch.

It is potentially the first real test of whether Ola Electric's increasingly vertically integrated battery-and-vehicle ecosystem can create a sustainable advantage in India's fiercely competitive mass-market EV segment.
