Maruti’s portfolio majorly consists of hatchbacks and hence the petrol models always use to occupy a lion’s share in the overall sales. However; Maruti’s alignment towards Compact SUVs (namely Brezza), MUVs (like Ertiga) & Crossovers (say S-Cross) gave diesel models gain traction. Models like Brezza and S-cross were infact diesel-only models in 2019.
Out of 14.85 Lakh cars sold in year 2019; Petrol models contributed to 77.5% of Maruti’s volumes. The petrol only models in sales in 2019 were – Alto, S-Presso, Wagon R, Celerio, XL6, Gypsy, Omni & Eeco. The models with both Petrol & Diesel engine configuration were – Ignis, Swift, Baleno, Dzire, Ciaz and Ertiga. Maruti has now officially killed the 1.3L DDiS diesel engine with the transition to BS6 norms. Rather, 2020 shall see a lot of diesel engines making an exit from the Indian market –
Let’s now see the Fuel Sales Split modelwise for Maruti Suzuki –
52% of Maruti Ertiga had a diesel heart. Even being an MPV; 48% of Ertiga’s sold were Petrol which is quite encouraging for a model in the segment. No wonder; Renault launched the Triber only in a Petrol Avatar in 2019.
While 20% of Swift sold had a diesel engine; Dzire’s diesel contribution was almost double at 41%. The primary reason for this was – Dzire Tour which is sold in Taxi segment. Dzire was one of the highest selling models in Taxi segment last year and the diesel share is justifiable – but; which model can takeover Dzire’s position. Because, Taxi Operators love diesel models for the lower running costs; lower fuel price and frugal operation of the diesel engine. Looks like Hyundai’s getting ready for this – Aura is already available in a Diesel Avatar.
Only 7% of Baleno’s sold were diesels! Baleno was one of the first Maruti Suzuki models to be upgraded to BS6 (happened in April 2019 itself) and thus the diesel option would have been ousted then.
21% of Ciaz sold had a diesel engine. Ciaz has been a forerunner in the Executive Sedan segment and fights with City & Verna primarily. Petrol models have a higher preference in the segment thus higher petrol model configuration for Ciaz as well.
