Segmentwise Car Sales for December 2021

SUV sales have risen to an all-time high in the Indian market and almost all the OEMs have an offering in the SUV category. Both Compact and Mid SUV segments have grown considerably and are now easily outselling the hatchbacks/sedans. Almost all new launches in the past year have been in the segment and even the recent launches (Kushaq, Taigun, XUV700, Astor, Punch etc) signifies on how the automakers are eyeing this segment.

In Dec'21, the Compact SUV segment emerged as the highest-selling segment and also recorded positive YoY growth. The sudden influx of new models in the segment is the testimony of how all OEMs are rushing to make a presence here. Tata increased its stake in the segment with the launch of Punch. Also, note that Tata's Nexon also emerged as the best selling model in the segment for Dec'21 (which is coincidentally its all-time high monthly volume too).

While Sedans are on a decline (Compact Sedan sales fell -67% & Executive Sedan sales by -27% in Sep'21); Skoda is all set to launch a new model in the segment - Slavia (source). Skoda has gained popularity in the Indian market basis a strong lineup of sedans (Octavia, Laura, Rapid) and they just don't want to shy away from the segment.

Compact SUV was the largest segment in terms of volumes and also recorded one of the highest YoY growth in Dec'21. 1 out of 5 cars sold in Dec'21 was a Compact SUV! The segment has seen an additional push from the launch of Tata Punch.
Compact Hatchback followed to the second position and recorded a YoY fall of 14 percent.
Mid SUV sales ranked third and grew an impressive 16 percent YOY. Do note that the segment has now one of the highest numbers of models!
MUV sales has been increasing steadily and was at a stone throw distance of Mid SUVs. The launch of Kia Carens is expected to stir up the segment and also strengthen the segment's volumes even higher.
Premium Hatchbacks sales fell 29 percent YoY and ranked fifth in the table.
Compact Sedans placed itself in the sixth position and had cumulative sales of 18,001 units in December 2021.
