Tata Altroz overtakes Hyundai i20 for the first time in April 2021!

With dispatches of 6,649 units in April 2021, Tata Altroz became the second highest-selling Premium Hatchback for the month! It outsold Hyundai's i20 for the first time in its lifetime and was over 1.6k units ahead.

The Premium Hatchback Segment registered shipments of 32,879 units in April 2021 and was a 25 percent decline over March 2021. The segment saw all the models registering an MoM drop in volumes (except for Honda's Jazz). The largest decline was seen in Hyundai's latest offering i20 and helped Tata's Altroz rise up to the second rank in the table.

  • Maruti's Baleno remains the undisputed leader in the segment and contributes near to 50 percent volumes in the segment. The model recorded sales of 16,384 units in April 2021 and the volumes fell 23 percent when compared to March 2021.

  • Tata's Altroz has been gaining volumes strongly and has ousted Hyundai's i20 from the second spot. Available with multiple engine options, a 5-star safety rating, sculpted looks, and all the modern connected technology; Altroz is gaining larger acceptance in the segment and hence numbers accordingly. It is the first time that Hyundai i20 has been challenged to this extent; no other competition has come even close to what Altroz has achieved!

  • Hyundai had updated the i20 with multiple segment-first features in November last year and increased the value proposition of the model. However; the surge in acceptance of Altroz has made the task more challenging for i20 and it'll be interesting to see if April 2021 was just an aberration or will become a consistent affair.

  • Maruti rebadged Glanza sold 2,182 units in April 2021 and ranked fourth in the list. The model recorded an MoM drop of 27 percent.

  • VW Polo registered dispatches of 1,197 units in April 2021 and volumes fell 37 percent over Mar'21. Polo is the oldest offering in the segment and there are speculations that the next-generation Polo may arrive in India in 2021 but hasn’t been confirmed by the automaker.

  • Honda's Jazz saw a sudden spurt in volumes and the model recorded an MoM rise of 17 percent. It anyhow ranked sixth in the list and the volumes still remain <1k units.

  • Ford Freestyle is a decent alternative for people who are looking to buy something relatively unique / crossover style in this segment. Freestyle has a bit of adventure to the premium hatchback with sporty features and a bit tough built. In April 2021, Ford recorded mere 635 units of Freestyle being dispatched compared to 689 units in March 2021.
