Tata Motors could soon expand the Curvv lineup with an alternative-fuel option, as fresh spy shots hint at either a CNG-powered version or an E85 flex-fuel model.
Tata Motors appears to be broadening its multi-powertrain strategy for the Curvv. Fresh test mules spotted on Indian roads have sparked speculation that the company is evaluating either a CNG or E85 flex-fuel version of its coupe SUV.
Although the heavily camouflaged prototype does not reveal many details, industry observers believe Tata is preparing yet another powertrain option to complement the Curvv's existing petrol, diesel and electric variants.

What Makes This Test Mule Different?
The latest prototype carries subtle differences from the regular Curvv, leading to speculation about its powertrain.
Among the key observations are:
Minor underbody modifications that could accommodate additional fuel system components.
Possible exhaust layout changes.
No visible design revisions, suggesting the focus is on mechanical development rather than aesthetics.
At this stage, Tata Motors has not officially confirmed whether the vehicle is running on CNG or ethanol-compatible fuel.
Possibility 1: Tata Curvv CNG
A CNG version appears to be the more straightforward possibility.
Tata Motors has steadily expanded its twin-cylinder CNG technology across several models including the Tiago, Tigor, Punch, Altroz and Nexon. Bringing this technology to the Curvv would strengthen the company's presence in the growing CNG SUV segment.
A Curvv CNG would offer:
Lower running costs
Reduced emissions
Better practicality than conventional single-cylinder CNG systems thanks to Tata's dual-cylinder layout
An attractive option for high-mileage urban users
The Curvv could potentially become one of the first coupe SUVs in India to offer a factory-fitted CNG option.
Possibility 2: Flex-Fuel (E85)
The second possibility is equally interesting.
India is aggressively promoting ethanol-blended fuels, with E20 already becoming the norm across the country. The government has also encouraged manufacturers to develop E85 flex-fuel vehicles, capable of running on petrol as well as ethanol blends containing up to 85% ethanol.
Tata Motors has previously showcased its commitment towards alternative fuels and sustainable mobility. Testing an E85-compatible Curvv would align well with the company's long-term strategy.
Benefits of E85 include:
Lower dependence on imported crude oil
Reduced lifecycle carbon emissions
Support for India's ethanol economy
Future readiness as fuel infrastructure evolves
However, E85 infrastructure remains extremely limited in India today, making such a model more of a technology demonstration or future-ready product than an immediate volume seller.
What Engine Could It Use?
If Tata introduces a CNG version, it is expected to use the company's familiar 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine, suitably recalibrated for CNG operation.
If it is an E85 variant, the same turbo-petrol engine could receive revised fuel injection, engine mapping and material upgrades to handle high ethanol concentrations.
Tata has extensive experience with turbocharged petrol engines, making either approach technically feasible.
Why This Matters
The Curvv already represents Tata's strategy of offering multiple powertrain choices under a single model line. Alongside petrol, diesel and electric variants, adding CNG or flex-fuel technology would further strengthen its appeal.
For Tata Motors, this would:
Expand customer choice
Improve fuel diversification
Support India's cleaner mobility roadmap
Differentiate the Curvv from rivals in the mid-size SUV segment
Auto Punditz Verdict
Whether this turns out to be a CNG or an E85 flex-fuel prototype, Tata Motors is clearly continuing to invest in alternative powertrains beyond battery electric vehicles.
Given India's rapid adoption of CNG and increasing ethanol blending targets, either option would make strategic sense. However, from a commercial standpoint, a Curvv CNG appears more likely in the near term, while an E85 version could serve as a future-ready technology showcase.
Until Tata Motors makes an official announcement, both possibilities remain speculative—but the latest spy shots indicate that the Curvv's powertrain portfolio is far from complete.
