Key Highlights of September 2026 Car Sales
Model-Wise Sales Analysis – September 2026
1. Maruti Suzuki Baleno Becomes India's Best-Selling Car
The Maruti Suzuki Baleno delivered one of the strongest performances in September 2026, recording sales of 25,392 units compared with 13,173 units in September 2025.
The premium hatchback registered 93% YoY growth, adding more than 12,000 units to its monthly volume. Its performance helped Maruti Suzuki secure the top position in the model-wise rankings.
2. Tata Nexon and Punch Secure Second and Third Positions
Tata Motors maintained a strong presence in the top three, with both the Nexon and Punch surpassing the 20,000-unit milestone. The Nexon registered 20,456 units, although its sales declined by 9% YoY. The Punch, meanwhile, recorded 20,333 units, reflecting healthy growth of 28%. The narrow sales difference between the two models demonstrates the competitive positioning of Tata's SUV portfolio.
3. Maruti Suzuki Fronx and Wagon R Continue Strong Performance
The Maruti Suzuki Fronx secured fourth position with 19,282 units, recording 40% annual growth. The Wagon R followed in fifth position with 18,835 units, growing 22% over September 2025. Together, these models demonstrate Maruti Suzuki's strength across different vehicle categories, from entry-level hatchbacks to crossover-style offerings.
4. Dzire, Creta and Scorpio Witness Sales Declines
Several established models recorded negative YoY growth during September 2026.
Maruti Suzuki Dzire: 17,754 units, down 11%.
Hyundai Creta: 17,657 units, down 6%.
Mahindra Scorpio: 17,313 units, down 6%.
Mahindra Thar: 9,008 units, down 24%.
Toyota Innova + Hycross: 8,008 units, down 18%.
Despite these declines, the Dzire, Creta and Scorpio retained positions among India's ten best-selling cars. The Mahindra Thar recorded the steepest percentage decline among the 25 models, although it continued to register more than 9,000 units.
5. Kia Seltos, Maruti Victoris and Mahindra Bolero Record Triple-Digit Growth
Three models stood out for their exceptional year-on-year growth.
Model | Sep'26 Sales | YoY Growth |
Mahindra Bolero | 9,710 | +253% |
Maruti Victoris | 13,111 | +208% |
Kia Seltos | 12,593 | +117% |
The Bolero recorded the highest percentage growth among the top 25 models, while the Victoris and Seltos also delivered substantial volume increases. However, high percentage growth should be viewed alongside the relatively low comparison bases of September 2025.
6. Maruti Suzuki Dominates the Top 25 Rankings
Maruti Suzuki placed 11 models among the 25 best-selling cars in September 2026, more than any other manufacturer. Its listed models collectively contributed 1,73,946 units, accounting for approximately 50.3% of the combined top 25 volume. Tata Motors secured two positions, including both second and third place, while Mahindra had five models in the rankings. Hyundai followed with four, Kia with two and Toyota with one combined model entry.

AutoPunditz Take: What September 2026 Sales Reveal
September 2026's model-wise rankings underline the competitive nature of India's passenger vehicle market. Maruti Suzuki's leadership remains evident, with 11 models among the top 25 and the Baleno securing the number-one position. Its performance across hatchbacks, sedans, SUVs and MPVs highlights the advantage of a diversified product portfolio.
Tata Motors' presence in the second and third positions is equally noteworthy. The Nexon and Punch collectively recorded more than 40,000 units, reinforcing the company's strong position in the compact SUV space.
Mahindra continues to demonstrate considerable strength through its SUV-focused lineup, although the performance varied across models. The Bolero and XUV 3XO registered growth, while the Scorpio, XUV 7XO and Thar recorded annual declines. Kia's Seltos emerged as another notable performer, more than doubling its sales compared with September 2025.
The biggest takeaway is that growth was not uniform across the market. While several models delivered substantial gains, some established bestsellers recorded declines. This reflects an increasingly competitive environment in which new products, changing buyer preferences and model-specific demand can significantly influence monthly rankings. With the festive season underway, the coming months will be important in determining whether September's strongest performers can sustain their momentum.
