Unveiled at Mondial de l'Auto 2026, which runs from October 12 to 18 in Paris, the Seltos Hybrid represents an important step in Kia's strategy to expand its electrified vehicle portfolio beyond fully electric cars.

The Seltos is currently Kia's second-best-selling model globally, making its transition towards hybrid technology particularly significant.

The new hybrid model joins Kia's expanding European electrified lineup, alongside the Sportage Hybrid, Niro Hybrid and newly introduced K4 Hybrid.

Kia Seltos Hybrid: Key Highlights

  • Second-generation Seltos Hybrid makes its European motor show debut.

  • Features a 1.6-litre petrol-electric strong-hybrid powertrain.

  • Introduces Kia's first e-AWD system, featuring an electrically driven rear axle.

  • European-market versions offer front-wheel drive and e-AWD configurations.

  • Includes intelligent regenerative braking technology.

  • Supports Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality on select variants.

  • Offers a spacious cabin, modern infotainment and advanced driver assistance systems.

  • Hybrid technology could eventually make its way to the Indian Seltos lineup.

New Kia Seltos Hybrid Gets Electric All-Wheel Drive

One of the biggest highlights of the new Seltos Hybrid is the introduction of Kia's innovative e-AWD (electric All-Wheel Drive) system.

Unlike a conventional mechanical AWD setup, the Seltos Hybrid's e-AWD system uses a separate electric motor to power the rear wheels.

This allows the vehicle to distribute driving force more precisely between the front and rear axles, depending on road and traction conditions.

The system is designed to offer several advantages, including improved traction on slippery surfaces, enhanced cornering stability, greater driving confidence and better control under challenging conditions.

Kia describes the Seltos Hybrid as its first model equipped with this electric AWD technology, bringing a feature typically associated with more sophisticated electrified vehicles into the compact SUV segment.

1.6-Litre Strong Hybrid Engine: Power and Performance

The European-spec Kia Seltos Hybrid features a 1.6-litre petrol engine paired with an electric motor and a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

According to Kia's German-market specifications, the hybrid SUV is available in two configurations.

The strong-hybrid setup allows the petrol engine and electric motor to work together to improve efficiency while delivering smoother responses during everyday driving.

Unlike a plug-in hybrid, the conventional hybrid system does not require external charging, making it suitable for customers seeking electrification without relying on public charging infrastructure.

Smart Regenerative Braking and V2L Technology

Beyond its hybrid engine, the second-generation Seltos introduces several technologies designed to improve efficiency and everyday usability.

Kia's Smart Regenerative Braking System 3.0 automatically adjusts regenerative braking based on real-time driving conditions, including traffic movement, road gradient, navigation information and upcoming road features.

The technology is designed to recover energy during deceleration and braking, helping improve overall efficiency.

Another noteworthy feature is Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality, allowing compatible external electrical appliances or devices to draw power from the vehicle's hybrid battery through a dedicated power outlet.

Certain European variants also offer Stay Mode, allowing selected cabin functions such as climate control and infotainment to operate using the hybrid battery while the vehicle is parked.

These features help differentiate the Seltos Hybrid from conventional petrol-powered SUVs.

Bold Exterior Design and Bigger Dimensions

The second-generation Seltos follows Kia's Opposites United design philosophy, combining rugged SUV proportions with contemporary styling elements.

Its design highlights include a more upright front fascia, distinctive LED lighting signatures, pronounced wheel arches, a stronger shoulder line and aerodynamic enhancements.

The latest model is larger than its predecessor, with a longer wheelbase intended to improve passenger space and overall road presence.

Premium Interior With Advanced Technology

The new Kia Seltos Hybrid offers a technology-rich cabin designed around comfort, connectivity and everyday practicality.

Depending on the market and variant, available equipment includes a panoramic digital display, connected-car technology, an AI-powered voice assistant, a 12-inch head-up display, electrically adjustable seats and remote parking assistance.

The SUV also offers a comprehensive suite of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), with features such as Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Highway Driving Assist 2, Lane Keeping Assist, Safe Exit Warning and a Surround View Monitor.

The availability of individual features varies across markets and trim levels.

Kia Seltos Hybrid India Launch: What Can Buyers Expect?

The Seltos Hybrid's European showcase is particularly interesting for India, where the midsize SUV segment continues to attract buyers looking for a combination of performance, features and fuel efficiency.

Kia India has already indicated its intention to introduce a hybrid powertrain in the Seltos lineup. Earlier reports suggested a possible launch by late 2026 or the first half of 2027.

However, the company has not confirmed the final India-specific hybrid specifications, pricing or launch date as part of its latest Paris Motor Show announcement.

If introduced in India, the Seltos Hybrid could compete with strong-hybrid models such as the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, while also targeting buyers considering conventional petrol and diesel midsize SUVs.

Importantly, Kia may need to adapt the global hybrid system for India's price-sensitive market. The European 1.6-litre hybrid engine and e-AWD configuration should therefore not be treated as confirmed equipment for the India-spec model.

Auto Punditz Take

The Seltos Hybrid represents a meaningful step in Kia's global electrification strategy.

Rather than focusing exclusively on battery-electric vehicles, Kia is strengthening its hybrid portfolio to serve markets where charging infrastructure, vehicle affordability and driving requirements vary significantly.

For India, the opportunity is substantial. Hybrid SUVs offer the potential for lower urban fuel consumption without requiring owners to change their refuelling habits.

However, the success of a future Seltos Hybrid will depend on three important factors: competitive pricing, meaningful improvements in real-world fuel efficiency and the level of localisation.

While the global model's e-AWD technology adds another dimension to its appeal, an affordable front-wheel-drive strong-hybrid variant may be a more commercially relevant proposition for India.

With the latest generation of the Seltos now supporting petrol and hybrid powertrains globally, Kia has the technological foundation to participate more aggressively in India's expanding electrified SUV market.

The European debut is an important milestone, but Indian buyers will have to watch for further announcements from Kia regarding the local hybrid offering.
