Top 25 Selling Cars in India for May 2021 - UVs dominate the list!

The Top 25 Selling Cars constituted almost 84% of the cars sold in May 2021. It had 8 models from Maruti, 6 from Hyundai, 5 from Tata, 3 from Mahindra, 2 from Kia, and 1 each from Renault.

OEMwise Count in the Top 25 selling cars -

  • Maruti had 8 models in the Top 25. On average; the volumes were 3,727 units/car.

  • Hyundai had 6 models in the Top 25 and averaged 3,768 units per model and was higher than that of Maruti.

  • Tata with 3 models in the list averaged 2,963 units per model.

  • Kia had 2 offerings in the Top 25 and averaged 5,452 per model (which was the highest in Industry).

  • M&M even with three models fared below Kia as per model average was 2,403 units.

Also find mentioned the Body Style Count in the Top 25 -

  • SUVs decimated Hatchbacks and had 11 models in Top 25 and sold over 1.6 times that of Hatchbacks.

  • Hatchbacks had 9 models on the list and the overall volumes fell too.

  • Sedans have only 2 offerings in the Top 25 and both were Compact Sedans (Dzire and Aura).

  • First time an off-roader makes an entry in the Top 25 (Thar is here to create more records!)

The Top 25 Selling Cars of May 2021 are as shown below -

  • The Top 5 Selling cars 3 Non-Maruti cars (Creta, Sonet, Nexon) which is an aberration in the Indian PV industry and was primarily due to the 16-day manufacturing lockdown observed by Maruti Suzuki.

  • Hyundai Creta has been India's No.1 Selling SUV for quite a while and it emerged as India's highest-selling passenger car in May 2021. The Hyundai SUV outsold the likes of Swift, Alto, and Baleno to achieve this feat.

  • The Top 5 cars had 3 SUVs in total - Apart from Creta, Kia Sonet and Tata Nexon made an entry into the Top 5 list! Kia Sonet also became the best-selling Sub-4m Compact SUV for May 2021 and was closely followed by Tata's Nexon. Both Sonet and Nexon overtook the erstwhile segment leaders (Brezza and Venue).

  • Maruti's Dzire was the only sedan in the Top 5 with shipments of 5,819 units in May 2021. The model had a tough ride in FY2021 due to the discontinuation of diesel trims; however, it is fighting hard to retain its volumes.

  • Venue and i10 Nios were the other Hyundai models in the Top 10. i20 ranked 11th in the overall list.

  • Maruti Baleno ranked seventh with dispatches of 4,803 units.

  • Maruti's usual high-selling model WagonR was pushed off to seventeenth rank as only 2,086 units were shipped in May 2021.

  • Mahindra's Thar outsold Scorpio, XUV500, and XUV300. Who would have ever thought that this Lifestyle Offroader will bring such volumes to the Indian automaker?

  • SUVs like Safari, Alcazar, Harrier fare in the Top 25!
