Renault Triber Turbo vs Gravite, Ertiga, Rumion and Carens: Which Family MPV Should You Buy?

5 min read

Choosing a family MPV starts with a practical question: do you need seven seats occasionally, or will all three rows be occupied regularly?

The Renault Triber Turbo makes the compact seven-seater category more interesting with additional power and torque. The Nissan Gravite offers a lower entry price, while the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, Toyota Rumion and Kia Carens models give buyers larger alternatives at higher budgets.

Here is how these cars compare on purchase price, transmission choices, family practicality and running costs. The buying recommendations below are based on published information and an editorial assessment, rather than a back-to-back road test.

Price Comparison: What Does Each MPV Cost?

Model

Starting price, ex-showroom

Nissan Gravite

₹5,73,400

Renault Triber Turbo

₹7,84,900

Maruti Suzuki Ertiga

₹8.90 lakh

Toyota Rumion

₹9.79 lakh

Kia Carens

₹11.12 lakh

Kia Carens Clavis

₹11.39 lakh

Prices exclude registration, insurance and optional purchases. These are entry variants, not similarly equipped cars. Renault’s figure is launch pricing, while the other entries reflect the listings checked for this update.

The Triber Turbo’s reported range extends to ₹8,99,900. That puts its upper end close to the entry-level Ertiga, creating a useful buying comparison: a higher-spec compact MPV versus a larger MPV in a basic trim.

Carens Clavis

Renault confirms that the turbo version is manual; the existing Triber AMT belongs to the lower-output petrol range. Kia’s current comparison page also lists a 1.5-litre CNG six-speed manual for the Clavis.

Triber Turbo vs Gravite: Stronger Engine or Lower Cost?

The Triber Turbo’s strongest argument is its 100 PS and 180 Nm output in a compact family-car package. Renault publishes certified fuel efficiency of 21 km/l. Its additional torque should help when carrying passengers, but the improvement in everyday driving needs to be judged through a loaded test drive.

Choose the Triber Turbo if you want compact dimensions and stronger performance potential, and you are comfortable driving a manual.

The Gravite is more appealing when the purchase budget comes first. Nissan lists its entry AMT, the N-Connecta EZ Shift, at ₹7.95 lakh—close to the Triber Turbo’s starting price. That makes the decision particularly clear: manual turbo performance or automatic convenience.

An AMT can pause between gear changes. Try it in slow traffic and on an incline before deciding whether its behaviour suits you.

Triber Turbo vs Ertiga: Compactness or More Family Space?

This is the comparison many buyers should prioritise.

The Triber offers removable third-row seats and flexible seating arrangements. However, its 625-litre luggage capacity applies with the third row removed. It should not be interpreted as boot space available with seven occupants.

The Ertiga deserves an early test drive when six or seven people travel frequently. Its petrol, automatic and CNG choices also let buyers choose according to driving conditions and monthly usage.

The Triber Turbo for a household that usually travels with four or five people and occasionally needs extra seats. Start with the Ertiga when third-row use is a routine requirement.

Before choosing, compare the exact variants. A similar price does not mean similar equipment, and a larger car is only useful if it fits your parking space and everyday routes.

Ertiga vs Rumion: What Justifies Paying More?

The Ertiga and Rumion are closely related, so this is primarily a comparison of equipment, purchase offers and ownership arrangements.

Toyota’s 1.5-litre engine, seven seats, a six-speed petrol automatic and a manual CNG version.

The current listed starting prices put the Rumion approximately ₹89,000 above the Ertiga, although their base variants should not be assumed to have identical equipment.

Ask both dealers for quotations with equivalent insurance coverage, warranty duration and accessories. Compare delivery dates and the convenience of the service centre you will actually use.

The Ertiga is the logical price benchmark. The Rumion becomes attractive when its equipment, availability or ownership offer provides a benefit worth the difference. The badge alone is not evidence of a better mechanical package.

Carens vs Carens Clavis: Choose the Engine Before the Features

The regular Carens remains relevant for buyers seeking a larger three-row car. Its current listing shows petrol, CNG and diesel versions in the Premium (O) trim, all with manual transmission.

The Clavis provides a broader choice. Kia lists turbo-petrol manual, iMT and DCT options, along with diesel manual and automatic choices. Its variant comparison also includes CNG. Higher-trim features are not included at the advertised starting price.

For buyers who mainly want cabin space, compare the regular Carens against the lower

Clavis variants. For buyers who want an automatic or stronger turbo-petrol performance, investigate the relevant Clavis variants first.

An iMT still requires the driver to select gears, even though it removes the clutch pedal. Buyers seeking fully automatic operation should distinguish it from the DCT and conventional automatic options.

Which Automatic Fits Your Budget?

Model

Listed automatic starting price

Transmission

Gravite

₹7.95 lakh

AMT

Ertiga

₹11.30 lakh

Six-speed torque-converter automatic

Rumion

₹12.35 lakh

Six-speed torque-converter automatic

Carens Clavis

₹14.67 lakh

Automatic range; confirm engine and variant

These prices come from Nissan’s official list and current CarWale listings. The Triber Turbo and current regular Carens range do not provide an automatic option in the information reviewed.

For urban use, the Gravite offers the lowest entry cost here. With a larger budget, the Ertiga and Rumion warrant a direct comparison for their conventional automatic gearboxes.

CNG: Compare the Installation and the Savings

CNG buyers now have more options than the earlier comparison suggested.

Alongside the Ertiga and Rumion CNG versions, Kia lists CNG variants of both Carens models. Nissan separately lists a Gravite CNG pack at ₹85,999 under its post-June pricing, including installation-related charges and third-party warranty charges. That separate pack should be evaluated differently from a dedicated manufacturer-listed CNG variant.

Before paying extra for CNG, calculate:

Break-even distance = Additional purchase cost ÷ Fuel saving per kilometre

Use realistic local fuel costs and expected mileage. Also inspect luggage space, filling-station access and warranty coverage. Low running costs are less useful if frequent refuelling queues or reduced luggage room conflict with your family’s needs.
