TVS Motor Company appears to be preparing its next big move in India’s premium scooter space. After strengthening its sporty scooter portfolio with the Ntorq range, the Hosur-based two-wheeler maker is reportedly working on a new 160cc maxi-scooter that could rival the Yamaha Aerox 155 and Hero Xoom 160.
The upcoming scooter is expected to be TVS’ first proper maxi-scooter and could be ready by next year. More importantly, this will not simply be a larger version of the Ntorq 125 or Ntorq 150. Instead, TVS is likely developing a new platform with a liquid-cooled engine, bigger wheels and a more premium positioning.

Why This Matters
The Indian scooter market has traditionally been dominated by practical family scooters in the 100cc–125cc range. However, buyer preferences are slowly changing. A growing set of urban customers now want scooters that offer the convenience of a CVT automatic, but with better performance, road presence and features.
This is where the premium maxi-scooter segment comes in. Yamaha Aerox 155 has already shown that there is demand for a sporty, performance-oriented scooter in India. Hero has also entered this space with the Xoom 160, while Honda ADV160 and Yamaha NMax 155 are also expected to strengthen the segment further.
TVS entering this category would make the competition much more interesting.
Expected Engine and Performance
The biggest highlight of the upcoming TVS maxi-scooter is expected to be its new 160cc liquid-cooled engine. This would mark a clear step up from TVS’ current sporty scooters, which are positioned more as performance-oriented urban machines rather than true maxi-scooters.
Rivals in this space generally produce around 14–15 hp, and TVS is expected to target similar or slightly better performance figures. Considering TVS’ experience with the Apache range and its strong focus on sporty dynamics, the upcoming scooter could be tuned for quick acceleration, highway stability and an engaging ride feel. This would help TVS appeal to riders who want a scooter for both city commutes and occasional weekend rides.
Design Direction: Sporty or ADV-Inspired?
TVS has multiple design routes available for this product. It could take inspiration from the sharp and sporty Ntorq design language, or move towards a more touring-oriented maxi-scooter style with a tall windscreen, stepped seat and stronger road presence.
The Yamaha Aerox 155 follows a sporty maxi-scooter approach, while the Hero Xoom 160 and Honda ADV160 lean more towards an adventure-scooter look. Yamaha NMax 155, on the other hand, has a more conventional maxi-scooter design.
TVS’ final direction will be crucial. A sharper, sportier design could appeal to young buyers, while an ADV-style layout could help it stand out in a segment that is still developing in India.
Bigger Wheels and Premium Features Expected
The upcoming TVS 160cc maxi-scooter is expected to get bigger wheels, likely around 14 inches. This should improve stability, ride quality and confidence at higher speeds compared to smaller-wheel urban scooters.
TVS is also known for offering feature-rich products, especially in the Ntorq and iQube line-ups. Hence, the new maxi-scooter could get a fully digital instrument cluster, Bluetooth connectivity, navigation, ride data, multiple ride modes and possibly segment-first connected features.
A larger under-seat storage area, LED lighting, front and rear disc brakes, single-channel or dual-channel ABS, and a more comfortable touring-friendly seat could further improve its appeal.
Segment Competition Will Heat Up
If Honda brings the ADV160 and Yamaha introduces the NMax 155, customers will have multiple choices in the 150cc–160cc scooter category. TVS entering this space will add another strong Indian manufacturer to the mix.
This could also push the segment beyond niche enthusiast buyers and make premium scooters more mainstream.
Export Potential
A product like this may not be limited to India alone. TVS has a growing global footprint and exports several two-wheelers to international markets. A 160cc maxi-scooter with modern styling, liquid-cooling and connected features could have strong export potential, especially in markets where scooters are used for both commuting and leisure riding.
If TVS gets the pricing and positioning right, this scooter could become an important global product for the brand.
Auto Punditz Take
TVS has built a strong reputation for sporty scooters with the Ntorq brand, but the upcoming 160cc maxi-scooter could take the company into a more premium and performance-focused space. The segment may still be small today, but it has the potential to grow as Indian buyers look beyond regular commuter scooters.
For TVS, this product could serve as a bridge between practical scooters and performance motorcycles. For buyers, it could offer the ease of a scooter with the performance and road presence of a larger two-wheeler.
If launched with a liquid-cooled engine, bigger wheels, strong features and aggressive pricing, the TVS 160cc maxi-scooter could become one of the most exciting scooter launches in India’s premium two-wheeler market.
