India’s sub-4 metre SUV segment is preparing for its next big battle. After years of domination by models like Tata Nexon, Maruti Brezza, Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet and Mahindra XUV 3XO, the category is now moving into a new phase driven by hybrids, EVs, rugged lifestyle designs and more premium features.


Between 2026 and 2028, almost every major carmaker is expected to bring a new or heavily updated compact SUV to India.

1. Kia Syros EV:  Expected to feature an innovative "Lounge" seating arrangement with class-leading headroom, V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) capabilities, and dual-screen displays. This electrified micro-SUV aims to capture the urban EV buyer looking for premium packaging.


2.VinFast VF 3 (Expected Late 2026):Backed by heavy infrastructure investments at their manufacturing hub in Tamil Nadu, the Vietnamese automaker is utilizing the VF 3 to mount a budget-focused EV offensive. An ultra-compact, boxy 2-door micro-SUV with a commanding 191 mm ground clearance. It targets city commuters looking for a rugged alternative to standard hatchbacks. Features an 18.6 kWh battery pack driving a rear-mounted motor, serving up a city-centric range of roughly 210 km.


3. Maruti Suzuki Brezza Facelift (2026): Expect a completely redesigned front fascia, a more premium dashboard featuring a larger 10.1-inch SmartPlay Pro+ touchscreen, and upgraded ADAS tech.


4. Mahindra Vision S ("The Mini Scorpio"): True boxy, upright stance featuring a tailgate-mounted spare wheel. Crucially, it is rumored to feature a sophisticated rear independent suspension setup for superior ride dynamics. High-torque 1.2-litre mStallion Turbo Petrol and 1.5-litre mHawk Diesel engines.


5. Volkswagen Tera:Clean, timeless European styling cues inspired by the global Volkswagen Tera. Expect a premium cabin experience with top-tier driving dynamics.

Exclusively powered by the enthusiast-favorite 1.0-litre TSI 3-cylinder turbo-petrol engine (115 PS / 178 Nm) paired with 6-speed manual and 8-speed automatic gearboxes.


6. Renault Bridger (2027):Renault’s next major Indian project after reviving the Duster is an all-new, heavily localized sub-4m SUV built on the modular RGMP platform.  

 Muscular, off-road-ready aesthetics. Debuting a brand-new 1.2-litre 3-cylinder Turbo Petrol engine alongside strong-hybrid and factory CNG variations.


7.Next-Gen Tata Nexon(2027):an all-new exterior and interior design, more premium cabin technology, upgraded ADAS and safety features, improved petrol and CNG powertrains, and a next-generation EV version with better range and efficiency.


8. Kia Sonet Generation 2 (2026–2027): completely radical design overhaul to match Kia's global EV styling, Level 2 ADAS upgrades, and a highly digitized, feature-dense cabin to maintain its premium appeal.


9. Hyundai Compact EV (Inster-Inspired):Heavily inspired by the global Ioniq design language with a boxy retro-futuristic stance. It aims to deliver a realistic 400 km range.


10. Honda Sub-4m SUV (2028):Positioned strategically below the Elevate, this vehicle will serve as a critical volume driver, targeting buyers upgrading from two-wheelers. Likely to feature the dependable 1.2-litre NA petrol engine, with Honda evaluating its global 1.0-litre turbo-petrol and hybrid powertrains for the Indian market.

The next phase of India’s compact SUV market will not be just about price and mileage. The new battle will be fought on electrification, hybrid efficiency, ADAS, connected tech, bigger screens and lifestyle appeal.
