VinFast VF5 Facelift Patented in India: ₹12 Lakh Electric SUV Could Challenge Tata Punch EV and Mahindra XUV 3XO EV
Vietnamese EV manufacturer VinFast has filed a design patent for the facelifted VF5 electric SUV in India, signalling a potential expansion into the country's increasingly competitive affordable electric SUV segment. With an expected starting price of around ₹12 lakh, the VF5 could emerge as a new challenger to established electric SUVs from Tata Motors and Mahindra.

The latest development comes as VinFast continues to strengthen its presence in the Indian passenger electric vehicle market. The company's newly filed design patent reveals several exterior revisions to the VF5, while recent sightings of an updated model in Vietnam provide an early indication of its redesigned interior.
Although VinFast has not officially confirmed the facelifted VF5's India launch, the combination of patent filings and previous test sightings suggests that the compact electric SUV is under serious consideration for the market.
VinFast VF5 Facelift: What's New?
The updated VF5 receives a series of styling changes intended to give the compact electric SUV a more contemporary appearance.
Front design
The most noticeable changes are concentrated around the front fascia. The facelift features sleeker headlights positioned lower than those on the existing international model, a redesigned bonnet and a revised bumper. The black trim beneath the headlights has also been reduced, creating a cleaner visual appearance. Together, these changes give the VF5 a sharper and more modern front-end design.
Side profile
The overall silhouette remains largely unchanged, suggesting that VinFast is retaining the existing vehicle's fundamental proportions. The updated model receives redesigned alloy wheels, while the version spotted in Vietnam retains the existing 16-inch wheel size.
Rear design
The rear receives more substantial revisions, including a redesigned connected LED taillight arrangement. Unlike the existing model, where the reverse lamps and turn indicators are positioned lower in the bumper, the facelift incorporates these lighting elements into the revised taillight assembly.
VinFast lettering occupies the centre of the tailgate, while the VF5 badge is positioned towards the right.
Interior Gets Larger Touchscreen and Revised Dashboard
The facelift is expected to introduce meaningful improvements inside the cabin, particularly in its dashboard layout and infotainment interface.
The updated interior, as seen in overseas spy images, includes a larger freestanding touchscreen, a redesigned two-spoke steering wheel with flattened upper and lower sections, and a revised centre console.
Interestingly, the updated VF5 appears to eliminate a conventional dedicated digital instrument cluster. Instead, vehicle information is expected to be integrated into the central infotainment display.
The rotary gear selector remains, alongside two cupholders in the centre console.
Another improvement could come in the form of leatherette upholstery, replacing the fabric seat material available on the existing Vietnamese-spec model.
These changes could improve the VF5's perceived cabin quality, an important consideration for Indian customers evaluating electric SUVs in the ₹10–15 lakh price bracket.
VinFast VF5 Battery, Motor and Driving Range
The existing VF5 is offered internationally with different battery and motor configurations depending on the market.
The facelift's India-specific powertrain specifications have not yet been announced. However, the existing international configurations provide an indication of what VinFast could offer.
Specification | 29.6 kWh version | 37.23 kWh version |
Battery capacity | 29.6 kWh | 37.23 kWh |
Motor output | 90 hp | 136 hp |
Peak torque | 135 Nm | 135 Nm |
Drivetrain | Front-wheel drive | Front-wheel drive |
Claimed range (NEDC) | 268 km | 326 km |
Specifications of existing international VF5 variants, not confirmed India-spec facelift figures.
NEDC-certified figures for overseas versions. Actual real-world driving range will vary.
For the Indian market, the larger battery configuration could be particularly relevant, considering the increasing importance of driving range among electric car buyers.
However, the final battery capacity, certified driving range, charging capabilities and performance figures will only become clear closer to a potential launch.
Expected India Price: Around ₹12 Lakh
The VinFast VF5 is expected to be positioned as one of the brand's more affordable electric SUVs in India.Indicative starting price ₹12 Lakh. Expected ex-showroom price; not officially announced
At this price point, the VF5 would enter a segment where customers have several established electric SUV alternatives.
VinFast VF5 vs potential competitors
Electric SUV | Starting price |
Tata Punch EV | ₹9.79 lakh |
VinFast VF5 facelift | ~₹12 lakh (expected) |
Tata Nexon EV | ₹12.49 lakh |
Mahindra XUV 3XO EV | ₹13.89 lakh |
Indicative ex-showroom starting prices reported as of October 2026. Prices and variants may change.
The VF5 could be positioned above entry-level electric SUVs while offering an alternative to higher-priced compact electric models. Nevertheless, pricing alone will not determine its competitiveness. Battery capacity, real-world range, cabin equipment, warranty coverage and charging support will be equally important.
India Launch Timeline: Could Arrive in 2027
VinFast has yet to formally announce the VF5 facelift for India. However, the design patent and previous test sightings indicate that the company is evaluating the model for the market.
A launch sometime in 2027 has been reported as a possibility, although this remains an expectation rather than a confirmed schedule.
IndiCar
The VF5 would also complement VinFast's existing Indian portfolio, which includes the VF6, VF7 and MPV7, allowing the manufacturer to address a wider spectrum of EV buyers.
Importantly, a design patent does not guarantee a commercial launch. Manufacturers frequently register vehicle designs to protect intellectual property before finalising product plans.
Why the VF5 Matters for India's Electric Car Market
The affordable electric SUV segment is becoming increasingly important as manufacturers attempt to expand EV adoption beyond premium urban buyers.
For VinFast, the VF5 could serve three strategic objectives.
First, it would provide an entry point below the company's more expensive models, potentially attracting first-time EV buyers.
Second, it would allow VinFast to compete in a more volume-oriented price category, where Tata Motors and Mahindra already have established products.
Third, a broader model portfolio could help the manufacturer improve brand visibility and make greater use of its developing Indian sales and service network.
However, entering this segment also presents challenges. Indian buyers are highly sensitive to the relationship between price, range and ownership costs. An unfamiliar brand must additionally build confidence in after-sales service, spare-parts availability and long-term reliability.

Auto Punditz Take
The VF5 facelift could become an important product in VinFast's Indian expansion strategy, but its success will depend on more than contemporary styling and an attractive introductory price.
At approximately ₹12 lakh, the model would face competition from established electric SUVs backed by extensive dealer networks and growing customer familiarity.
The biggest opportunity for VinFast lies in offering a compelling price-to-range proposition. If the company introduces the larger battery version at a competitive price, the VF5 could appeal to urban families looking for an electric SUV for daily commuting and occasional longer journeys.
Conversely, if the India-spec version receives the smaller battery while being priced close to more established competitors, it may struggle to differentiate itself.
VinFast will also need to demonstrate competitive warranty coverage, accessible service support and a dependable ownership experience.
From an industry perspective, the VF5's potential arrival is another indication that India's electric passenger vehicle market is attracting new international competitors, particularly in the relatively affordable SUV categories.
For now, the VF5 remains a promising potential addition rather than a confirmed launch. Its final specifications, price positioning and market entry timeline will determine whether it can become a meaningful competitor in India's growing electric SUV segment.
