Volvo India Confirms Two New Flagship EVs for 2026: EX90 and ES90 Set to Arrive

Volvo Cars is preparing to strengthen its electric vehicle portfolio in India with the introduction of two flagship models—the Volvo EX90 electric SUV and Volvo ES90 electric sedan—before the end of 2026.

The two upcoming models will sit at the top of Volvo’s battery-electric range in India, complementing the more accessible EX30 electric SUV and the EC40 crossover. The EX90 will serve as the electric counterpart to the XC90, while the ES90 will introduce a new-generation electric luxury sedan positioned above Volvo’s previous S90 offering.

Although Volvo has not disclosed final India launch dates, prices or variant details, both vehicles are expected to arrive as completely built units and compete in the premium luxury EV segment.

Volvo EX90 electric SUV and ES90 electric sedan confirmed for India launch in 2026
The Volvo EX90 seven-seat electric SUV and ES90 flagship electric sedan are scheduled to arrive in India 2026.

Volvo EX90: Seven-Seat Electric Flagship SUV

The EX90 is Volvo’s largest and most technologically advanced electric SUV. Built on the company’s dedicated SPA2 electric architecture, it combines three-row seating with the brand’s latest safety, connectivity and software systems.

The India-bound EX90 is expected to be based on the upgraded 2026 model, which receives an 800-volt electrical architecture in place of the earlier 400-volt system. Volvo claims that the updated platform can add as much as 250km of driving range in 10 minutes when connected to a compatible high-speed DC charger.

The new electrical system also promises:

  • Faster DC charging

  • Lower heat generation during charging

  • Improved energy efficiency

  • Reduced battery and motor weight

  • Stronger performance delivery

Globally, the EX90 is offered in multiple configurations, including single-motor rear-wheel-drive and dual-motor all-wheel-drive versions. The model is also expected to offer a WLTP-certified range of around 600km, depending on the powertrain and battery configuration.

Safety and Technology

Safety will remain one of the EX90’s biggest differentiators. The SUV uses an extensive suite of cameras, radars, ultrasonic sensors and driver-monitoring systems. Select international versions also feature a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor designed to improve the vehicle’s ability to detect objects and road users at longer distances.

The cabin follows Volvo’s minimalist design philosophy and is expected to feature:

  • A vertically oriented central touchscreen

  • Google built-in services

  • Over-the-air software updates

  • Digital instrument display

  • Premium audio system

  • Panoramic glass roof

  • Three-row seating for up to seven occupants

The 2026 version also gains an electrochromic panoramic roof, allowing occupants to adjust the transparency of the glass electronically.

Volvo ES90: Electric Luxury Sedan with Up to 700km Range

The second major launch will be the Volvo ES90, a fully electric luxury sedan that combines elements of a traditional executive saloon, fastback and crossover.

Unlike the discontinued S90, the ES90 uses a large hatchback-style tailgate, providing easier access to the luggage compartment. Its raised stance, long wheelbase and coupe-like roofline give it a distinctive appearance compared with conventional luxury sedans.

The ES90 is built on the same SPA2 architecture as the EX90 and is Volvo’s first production model to introduce the company’s 800-volt electrical system.

Volvo claims the ES90 can deliver a driving range of up to 700km under the WLTP cycle. When connected to a 350kW DC fast charger, it can add as much as 300km of range in approximately 10 minutes. A 10-80 percent recharge can take around 22 minutes under suitable conditions.

Multiple Powertrain Options

Globally, the ES90 is available with three electric powertrain configurations:

Version

Drivetrain

Maximum Power

Single Motor Extended Range

Rear-wheel drive

Around 333hp

Twin Motor

All-wheel drive

Around 449hp

Twin Motor Performance

All-wheel drive

Up to 680hp

Specifications for India could differ, and Volvo may initially introduce only one fully equipped powertrain and trim combination.

The entry-level single-motor version can accelerate from 0-100kmph in approximately 6.6 seconds, while the more powerful dual-motor versions deliver considerably stronger performance.

Volvo’s Most Advanced Software-Defined Cars

Both the EX90 and ES90 are designed as software-defined vehicles and use Volvo’s Superset technology stack.

The ES90 employs dual NVIDIA Drive AGX Orin computing systems and supports over-the-air upgrades for functions associated with safety, connectivity, battery management and vehicle performance. Improvements developed for one SPA2-based model can potentially be rolled out to other compatible Volvo vehicles through software updates.

The cars are also expected to offer:

  • Google Maps, Google Assistant and Google Play integration

  • Wireless Apple CarPlay

  • Advanced driver-assistance systems

  • Digital key functionality

  • 360-degree camera

  • Adaptive cruise control

  • Pilot Assist

  • Premium sustainable interior materials

Expected Prices and Rivals in India

The Volvo EX90 is expected to be positioned above the XC90 and could be priced between ₹1.20 crore and ₹1.50 crore, ex-showroom, depending on the version and import structure.

Its key rivals are likely to include:

  • Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV

  • BMW iX

  • Kia EV9

  • Range Rover Electric

  • Upcoming Audi Q8 e-tron successor

The ES90 could be priced around ₹1 crore to ₹1.20 crore, ex-showroom. It will compete with premium electric sedans and fastbacks such as:

  • BMW i5

  • Mercedes-Benz EQE

  • Audi A6 e-tron

  • Porsche Taycan

  • Mercedes-Benz EQS

These prices remain estimates, as Volvo Cars India has not announced official pricing or final configurations.

Strengthening Volvo’s Electric Portfolio

Volvo currently offers the EX30 as its entry-level electric SUV in India, priced from approximately ₹41 lakh. The model offers a claimed range of up to 480km, a 69kWh battery and 175kW DC fast-charging capability.

The addition of the EX90 and ES90 will give Volvo a broader electric range spanning compact, crossover, executive sedan and full-size SUV segments.

Volvo has moderated its earlier global ambition of becoming an EV-only manufacturer by 2030 and now expects electrified vehicles—including battery-electric and plug-in hybrid models—to account for the vast majority of its sales. The company will continue offering selected mild-hybrid models in markets where charging infrastructure and EV adoption are developing more gradually.

Auto Punditz Take

The EX90 and ES90 will not be volume-oriented products, but their arrival will be strategically important for Volvo India.

The EX90 will allow the company to compete in the growing three-row luxury electric SUV category, while the ES90 could provide a differentiated alternative for buyers seeking an electric executive car without moving to an SUV.

Both models also showcase Volvo’s new-generation technology, including 800-volt charging, centralised computing and continuously upgradeable software. Their success, however, will depend heavily on pricing, localisation possibilities and Volvo’s ability to build a stronger sales and charging-support ecosystem in India.

With these two flagship launches, Volvo appears set to position electric mobility not merely as an alternative powertrain, but as the technological centrepiece of its luxury-car strategy in India.
