Auto Punditz Take
August 2026 shows a notably broader electric passenger vehicle market than a year ago. Overall dispatches jumped 85% YoY to 36,593 units, while multiple new models immediately entered the higher-volume portion of the ranking.
Tata continues to benefit from having one of the widest EV portfolios, but Mahindra’s presence at the very top of the chart and the arrival of newer competitors are changing the competitive landscape.
With the Mahindra 9S, Tata Punch, Tata Nexon and MG Windsor each crossing 3,700 units, the battle for leadership is also becoming increasingly model-specific rather than being dominated by a single electric vehicle.
For August 2026, however, the Mahindra 9S narrowly took the No. 1 position, ahead of the Tata Punch EV by only 78 units.
