India’s sedan market delivered a surprisingly strong performance in May 2026, with total sales of the listed sedans standing at 37,055 units, compared to 30,646 units in May 2025. This translates to a healthy 20.9% year-on-year growth, showing that despite the SUV wave, sedans continue to have a loyal customer base in India. The growth was led almost single-handedly by the Maruti Suzuki Dzire, which remained the undisputed sedan king of India.

Maruti Suzuki Dzire was India’s best-selling sedan in May 2026 with 24,546 units, compared to 18,084 units in May 2025. This marked a strong 35.7% YoY growth. What makes Dzire’s performance even more impressive is its massive 66.2% segment share. In simple terms, nearly two out of every three sedans sold in May 2026 were Dzires.
Hyundai Aura ranked second with 5,077 units in May 2026. However, sales were slightly lower than the 5,225 units sold in May 2025, resulting in a 2.8% YoY decline.
Honda Amaze took the third spot with 2,660 units, compared to 1,998 units in May 2025. This resulted in a strong 33.1% YoY growth. With a 7.2% segment share, the Amaze was one of the key gainers in the sedan category.
The biggest percentage gainer in the list was the recently launched facelifted Honda City. Sales jumped from just 491 units in May 2025Â to 1,227 units in May 2026, registering a massive 149.9% YoY growth.
Volkswagen Virtus ranked fourth with 1,238 units in May 2026. However, sales declined from 1,707 units in May 2025, resulting in a 27.5% YoY drop.
Skoda Slavia sold 861 units in May 2026, down from 937 units in May 2025. This marked an 8.1% YoY decline, with the Slavia holding a 2.3% segment share.

Key Takeaways
The sedan segment grew by 20.9% YoY in May 2026, but the growth was heavily concentrated around the Dzire. The Maruti Suzuki Dzire alone contributed over 66% of the segment’s volume, making it the clear leader by a huge margin.
Compact sedans continued to dominate, with the Dzire, Aura, and Amaze together accounting for nearly 87% of total sedan sales. This shows that the sedan market in India is now largely driven by affordable, compact, fuel-efficient models.
Among mid-size sedans, the Honda City was the standout performer with nearly 150% YoY growth, while the Virtus, Slavia, and Verna saw sales decline. The data clearly shows that while the sedan segment is growing overall, the growth is not evenly spread across models. Overall, the sedan segment had a strong month, but the story of May 2026 was simple: Dzire ruled, Honda recovered, and mid-size sedans continued to struggle for volume.
