BKT–Pirelli Sign Manufacturing Agreement: 8 Lakh Premium Tyres Annually by 2030, 50:50 JV Planned in India

Balkrishna Industries (BKT) and Italian tyre giant Pirelli have entered into a strategic manufacturing partnership to produce premium passenger car tyres in India. The agreement, announced on October 22, 2026, targets annual production of up to 8 lakh Pirelli-branded tyres by 2030 and lays the groundwork for a proposed 50:50 joint venture.

The partnership marks a significant development for India's tyre industry, bringing together Pirelli's premium tyre technologies and BKT's manufacturing capabilities. It also supports BKT's expansion beyond its established off-highway tyre business into the passenger car segment.

Phase 1: Pirelli Tyres to Be Manufactured at BKT's Bhuj Facility

Under the first phase, BKT will manufacture Pirelli-branded passenger car radial tyres at its new facility in Bhuj, Gujarat.

Production will comply with Pirelli's prescribed technical specifications, manufacturing requirements and quality standards. The tyres will be supplied to Pirelli and its affiliates for distribution in Indian and international markets.

The companies are targeting production of up to 8 lakh tyres annually by 2030. Manufacturing is expected to begin in 2027, followed by a gradual ramp-up.

The offtake arrangement is scheduled to continue until December 31, 2031, unless the proposed joint venture becomes capable of fulfilling Pirelli's supply requirements earlier.

Phase 2: 50:50 Joint Venture for Premium Passenger Car Tyres

The second phase involves the proposed establishment of a jointly owned manufacturing company.

Under the framework agreement, BKT and Pirelli will each own 50% of the venture. The proposed entity will establish a new manufacturing facility in India to produce high-value passenger car radial tyres under both brands.

The JV is expected to have a four-member board, with each company appointing two directors and the chairperson position rotating between the partners.

The companies are targeting incorporation by December 31, 2030, subject to specified conditions.

Importantly, the definitive joint venture agreement has not yet been signed. The location, investment amount and production capacity of the proposed JV plant have also not been disclosed.

Pirelli to Provide Technology and Testing Support

The collaboration extends beyond contract manufacturing.

Under a separate technical services agreement, Pirelli will support BKT's development and testing of tyres sold under the Indian manufacturer's brand.

This includes access to Pirelli's proving grounds, simulation systems and testing equipment for passenger cars, SUVs and two-wheelers.

The arrangement could help BKT accelerate product development and improve its competitiveness in tyre categories where it is expanding its presence.

Why India Is Important to Pirelli

According to the companies' projections, India's passenger car market offers significant growth potential:

  • Passenger car registrations are projected to grow 5–7% annually between 2025 and 2030.

  • Demand in the premium passenger car tyre segment could increase almost fivefold.

  • Increasing demand for higher-value automotive products creates opportunities for advanced tyre technologies.

For Pirelli, which currently has a commercial presence but no manufacturing facility in India, the partnership offers an opportunity to develop local production capabilities.

For BKT, it supports diversification into passenger car tyres while providing access to a globally established premium tyre manufacturer.

Auto Punditz Take

The BKT–Pirelli agreement could become an important strategic development in India's passenger car tyre industry.

For BKT, the partnership provides an opportunity to utilise its manufacturing infrastructure while benefiting from Pirelli's technical expertise. It could also strengthen BKT's entry into a market already served by established Indian and multinational tyre manufacturers.

For Pirelli, local manufacturing could improve its competitiveness, reduce dependence on imported finished tyres and support expansion into India's growing premium passenger vehicle segment.

However, the long-term impact will depend on manufacturing execution, product competitiveness, commercial demand and the successful finalisation of the proposed JV.

The immediate milestone is the production ramp-up at Bhuj; the larger opportunity lies in establishing a successful dual-brand premium tyre manufacturing business in India.
