Electric Car Registrations Surge 76% in October 2026; Tata Leads as EV Market Share Doubles
India's electric passenger vehicle market recorded a remarkable 76.47% year-on-year growth in October 2026, with registrations reaching 37,049 units compared with 20,995 units in October 2025. According to the latest retail data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), electric cars accounted for 7.3% of total passenger vehicle registrations, more than double their share a year earlier.
The strong performance came despite a 14.23% decline in the overall passenger vehicle retail market, highlighting the growing acceptance of electric mobility among Indian car buyers.

EV Growth Outpaces the Broader Passenger Vehicle Market
One of the most significant developments in FADA's October 2026 report is the contrasting performance of electric passenger vehicles and the overall automobile market.
While total passenger vehicle registrations declined by 14.23% year-on-year to 5.08 lakh units, EV registrations increased by 16,054 units. Electric passenger vehicles also registered 2.61% month-on-month growth over September 2026, when 36,108 units were sold.
However, their market penetration moderated from 8.5% in September to 7.3% in October. This suggests that while electric vehicle volumes continued to increase, the broader passenger vehicle market expanded more rapidly on a sequential basis.
The year-on-year improvement remains substantial, with EV penetration rising by approximately 3.8 percentage points.
Tata, Mahindra and MG Dominate Electric Car Registrations
Tata Passenger Electric Mobility retained its leadership in India's electric passenger vehicle market, followed by Mahindra and JSW MG Motor India. Together, the three manufacturers accounted for approximately 78.7% of electric passenger vehicle registrations in October 2026.

Tata Passenger Electric Mobility registered 14,669 units in October, representing approximately 39.6% of total electric PV registrations.
Mahindra followed with 8,538 units, supported by 85.65% annual growth. The company accounted for approximately 23% of the electric passenger vehicle market.
JSW MG Motor India secured third place with 5,939 units. Although its annual growth was more modest at 10.8%, MG continued to maintain a substantial presence in the expanding market.
VinFast emerged as another notable contributor, recording 2,571 registrations as its Indian retail operations scaled up.
Kia and Maruti Suzuki also crossed the 1,000-unit mark.
India's Overall EV Market Reaches 3.55 Lakh Registrations
Electric passenger vehicles were not the only segment recording strong growth.
India's total electric vehicle registrations reached 3,54,625 units in October 2026, increasing 44.88% over the corresponding period last year.
EV segment | October 2026 | YoY growth |
Electric two-wheelers | 2,24,064 | +48.49% |
Electric passenger vehicles | 37,049 | +76.47% |

Figures reflect reported FADA category data. The published category figures do not sum exactly to the separately reported overall EV total, so they should not be added to reproduce it.
FADA observed that overall electric vehicle penetration increased to approximately 11.5%, compared with around 6% in October 2025. The association also highlighted that improving driving ranges, narrowing price differences with conventional vehicles and elevated petrol and diesel prices have supported consumer interest in electric mobility.

Auto Punditz Analysis
India's electric passenger vehicle market continues to gain momentum, with registrations growing 76.47% YoY in October 2026 despite a 14.23% decline in overall passenger vehicle retail.
Tata maintained its leadership, while Mahindra, MG, VinFast, Kia and Maruti Suzuki strengthened competition. EV penetration more than doubled from 3.5% to 7.3% year-on-year, reflecting growing consumer acceptance. However, supply constraints, charging infrastructure and affordability remain important challenges.
Outlook – Strong Growth Potential
With more manufacturers entering the segment and new models expected, India's electric car market is positioned for further expansion. Sustained growth will depend on competitive pricing, improved charging accessibility and consistent vehicle availability.
