Hybrid Car Sales Stay Flat in H1 2026 as Hyryder Gains and Grand Vitara Slumps

India’s strong-hybrid passenger vehicle market remained broadly flat during the first half of 2026, with the eight models covered in the segment recording cumulative sales of 57,885 units.

This was only 38 units higher than the 57,847 units sold during the corresponding period of 2025, translating into negligible year-on-year growth of around 0.1%.

While the overall market showed little movement, the model-wise performance was sharply divided. The Toyota Innova Hycross continued to dominate, the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder recorded strong growth, and the newly introduced Maruti Suzuki Victoris secured fourth place. In contrast, sales of the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara strong hybriddeclined significantly.

• The Toyota Innova remained the top-selling strong-hybrid model in H1 2026, with 27,812 units sold, down from 29,652 units in H1 2025, a 6% decline. It held a 48% market share, down from 51% in H1 2025, as newer hybrid SUVs gained ground. Average monthly sales were about 4,635 units.

• The Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder excelled in its segment, with strong-hybrid sales rising from 15,058 units in H1 2025 to 18,577 units in H1 2026, marking a 23% growth. Its market share grew from 26% to 32%, gaining 6.1 percentage points. The SUV averaged 3,096 units per month in the first half of the year, bolstering Toyota's leadership in India’s strong-hybrid market despite a moderate decline in Innova volumes.

• The Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara experienced the largest decline among strong-hybrid models, with sales dropping from 8,909 units in H1 2025 to 4,086 units in H1 2026, a decrease of 4,823 units or 54% year-on-year. Its market share fell from 15% to 7%, and average monthly sales reduced to about 681 units. This decline may be partly due to changes in Maruti Suzuki’s hybrid lineup with the introduction of the Victoris.

• The Maruti Suzuki Victoris entered the strong-hybrid rankings in H1 2026, selling 3,231 units and securing fourth place with a nearly 6% market share, averaging 539 units monthly. Absent in H1 2025, its sales are entirely incremental for Maruti Suzuki’s hybrid lineup. However, combined sales of the Victoris and Grand Vitara were still lower than the Grand Vitara’s solo performance in H1 2025.

• The Maruti Suzuki Invicto ranked fifth with sales of 1,418 units, down from 1,918 units in H1 2025, marking a 26% decline of 500 units. Its market share dropped from 3% to 2%, with average monthly sales of about 236 units.

• The Toyota Camry maintained stable demand in the first half of 2026. Sales were 1,188 units, slightly down from 1,195 units in H1 2025, a decline of just seven units or about 1%. It held a market share of nearly 2%, with an average of 198 units sold monthly.

• The Toyota Vellfire achieved the highest growth among established models, with sales rising from 573 units in H1 2025 to 914 units in H1 2026, marking a 60% year-on-year increase. Its hybrid market share doubled from 1% to 2%, with average monthly sales of about 152 units. This growth reflects sustained demand in India’s premium luxury MPV segment despite its high price.

• The Honda City e:HEV was the only Honda model in the strong-hybrid sales table.

  Honda sold 659 units during H1 2026, up from 542 units the previous year, marking a growth of 117 units or 22%. Its market share stayed around 1%, with an average of 110 units sold monthly. Despite modest volumes, the City Hybrid remains a key strong-hybrid sedan option in the mass-market segment.

Toyota Innova remained India’s best-selling strong hybrid in H1 2026, while Toyota Hyryder recorded 23% year-on-year growth.

Strong-hybrid sales in India remained steady rather than expanding during H1 2026. Growth from the Toyota Hyryder, Toyota Vellfire, Honda City and Maruti Victoris was largely offset by lower sales of the Grand Vitara, Innova and Invicto.

The market also remains heavily concentrated, with the Innova and Hyryder together accounting for nearly 80% of total strong-hybrid sales.

The second half of 2026 could see stronger momentum as additional hybrid products enter the market and manufacturers expand their electrified portfolios. For now, Toyota remains the undisputed leader, while the Hyryder stands out as the segment’s biggest volume growth driver.
